Wakefield District Sight Aid Your local charity supporting people living with sight loss in our communities. Our helpline is open 09.30 - 13.30 Monday - Thursday.

Our small staff team works flexibly, so visits to the office are BY APPOINTMENT ONLY, please. Wakefield District Sight Aid was formed in 1869. Known as West Riding Voluntary Association for the Blind (Wakefield Area) it became Wakefield District Sight Aid in 2010. It is the only charity in the Wakefield Metropolitan District providing direct services for adult visually impaired and access to sight impairment professionals and other providers. OUR AIM is to support all adult visually impaired people, their families, carers and sight impairment professionals in the Wakefield District.

Big thanks to our volunteer Quizmaster Michael for his spooky quiz at our Cuppa & Connect group yesterday! It was very tense with both teams getting the same number of points, meaning everyone shared the tasty treats Michael had kindly brought along as a prize!

Our next Cuppa & Connect group is on Wednesday 18th November, when we will be joined by our friend Paul from Optelec UK - solutions for Low Vision. We'd love to see you there!

Huge congratulations to our very own Catherine Brocklesby who was honoured at last night's Unsung Heroes Awards 2026!

Catherine was one of nine award winners, chosen from over 100 nominations, and we are so proud that her contribution as a volunteer both for us and for our friends at Open Country has been recognised.

Catherine's contribution to our work means that more people with visual impairments can go on trips and receive the support they need, both at events and over the phone. In a charity with only three part-time staff, we couldn't function without our wonderful volunteers, and we are so grateful for everything Catherine does for us.

Congratulations, Catherine! We are so lucky to have you. ❤️

We are so proud of all our young players! 🖤🤍🖤🤍🖤🤍

🐍⚽ WOW… WHAT A MORNING FOR OUR VERY OWN VI VIPERS! 💚🖤

Today we took TWO teams u15s and a u12s , to Leeds to compete in the league, with both teams playing four games each!

What an incredible effort from everyone! 👏🔥
Words can't describe how proud we are of this amazing group of kids, not just for what they're achieving on the pitch, but for the inspiration they're giving to others! 💚

Our Thursday disability sessions are already looking up to these young players, hoping one day to follow in their footsteps.

These kids aren't just playing football… THEY'RE PAVING THE WAY FOR OTHERS TO FOLLOW! 🌟
When asked what representing A1 Football Factory means to them, their answer is simple…
"EVERYTHING!" 🥹💚
And that says it all!

A massive well done to every single player today. Your passion, determination and teamwork make us incredibly proud! 🐍👏

And as always, a HUGE thank you to our amazing parents for trusting us and choosing A1 Football Factory to be part of your child's journey. Making a difference in their lives means the world to us!

This is bigger than football. We're breaking barriers, inspiring the next generation and creating opportunities for EVERY child!

ONE CLUB. ONE FAMILY. NO BARRIERS.

**Have your say on braille and accessible food labelling.**

The Braille Food Labelling Campaign is asking blind and partially sighted people across the UK about their experiences of food packaging. Medicines have carried braille for years. The campaign wants the product name in braille on food too, alongside a QR code or NaviLens for the full information.

The findings will go to food regulators as evidence for change. The survey takes around ten minutes and can be completed online, by phone, by email or by post. Open the online Braille Food Labelling Survey or email [email protected] to receive the survey in the accessible format of your choice. Closes 31 October 2026.

We've been at the Visionary Conference in Birmingham this week, an annual event that brings together local sight loss charities and national partners from across England, Scotland and Wales for learning, networking, inspiration and celebration.

We were delighted to have been invited by our friends at Sight Loss Councils to deliver a workshop on how we have collaborated to achieve some great outcomes for blind and partially sighted people in Wakefield. We were also thrilled to have been shortlisted for a Visionary Award in the Impact category for our partnership with A1 Football Factory, which empowers and enables children and young people with visual impairments to enjoy the beautiful game.

We were up against some very stiff competition, from charities much larger than we are, and guess what? WE WON!

We are over the moon that the VI Vipers have been recognised by a national award for excellence, voted for by our peers in the sight loss sector. We are so grateful for our coaches Ryan and Dean, and for all our friends at A1, because without them this wouldn't be possible. We are stronger together, and so proud of our wonderful young players. ❤️
