We are all so fortunate to have the protection of our national Federation of British Historic Vehicle Clubs who are constantly looking out for our interests.
In response to some concerns over recent proposed Government changes, they have issued a clear statement which should put our minds at rest.

The Federation of British Historic Vehicles Clubs (FBHVC) is reassuring historic vehicle owners that they should not have anything to fear from a c...

Jackie Wing

Sadly, we’ve lost another person from the earliest days of the club.
Jackie Wing from Brixham passed away yesterday after a protracted health battle which until fairly recently she had seemed to be winning.
Viv & Jackie were there from the start. Val & Derek Edgecombe’s membership number was 104. Viv & Jackie’s was 108.
Viv was a very successful groundworks contactor and was a big supporter of the club in its infancy. They took part in everything, including club holidays away.
Viv’s health had also deteriorated in recent years. Their last attendances at club events were around 2018. Their membership lapsed five years ago.

We send our condolences to Viv and their family.

Alan Turner

It was good to catch up with club friends and Derek’s family at his funeral today. It was quite an emotional day.
Now there’s time to focus again.

As with Derek, Alan’s health had prevented us from enjoying his company for a few years. This is a reminder of better times.
Alan & Barbara had joined the club 25 years ago with his immaculate 1949 MGTC which Alan had owned since he was 19 years old. He had recently recommissioned it after 17 years in storage. Its condition reflected Alan’s habitual attention to detail.
We enjoyed their company at most club nights and many runs and other events through the year.
Alan was a ”techie”. He began dragging TOWC into the modern era by setting up and maintaining our first website. He also designed and produced the certificates for the winners and runners up at our annual show, no small task given the number of classes awarded. Each autumn we watched our video review of the show thanks to the loan of his overhead projector.
Alan was an MG man through and through. For many years he held an officer position with the MG Car Club, Devon & Cornwall Centre.
Barbara’s health was gradually deteriorating as her chronic condition took its toll on her mobility. When this prevented her from enjoying trips in the old car it was sold, to be followed by a series of others, MGs of course, in time a series of B’s and variants, including an RV8.
Time was also taking its toll on Alan. His forgetfulness worsened to the point where he developed dementia, forcing Barbara and he to be separated when he had to move into a care home near Paignton harbour, coincidentally the same one where our other long term club friend Rex Elston remains.
Recently Alan was admitted to Torbay Hospital with pneumonia. He didn’t respond to treatment and passed away peacefully with Barbara and family at his bedside.
I’m sure we all send Barbara our condolences.
Alan’s funeral will be on Thursday 10th September at 11.30am at Torquay crematorium.

A flying visit to the Rover P4 Drivers Guild - Classic Car Show at Buckfastleigh to meet up and chat with TOWC members etc. As I hadn't entered the Daimler I parked it in the show visitors parking area. Good to meet up with members whom I hadn't seen for a while. A good show with a lot of interesting cars - not only Rovers!

We've heard some sad news from a good friend of the club, Chris Edgecombe. His message follows.

It is with great sadness that I wanted to let everyone at Torbay Old Wheels Club know that my dad, Derek George Edgecombe, sadly passed away on Saturday, 8th August, aged 93.

Dad was one of the founding members of the club back in the early 1990s and was often seen at club events with his much-loved Morris 10 or his mini.

His love of all things on wheels went back many years — in fact, he met my mum Valerie through the Torbay & Newton Abbot Vespa Club in 1960.

Old cars remained a lifelong passion and brought him many happy memories and wonderful friendships.

He will be greatly missed. ❤️

I will post details of Dad’s funeral arrangements once they are confirmed.
