The Shrewsbury and Newport Canals Trust All work parties are FREE!

The Shrewsbury & Newport Canals Trust was formed in 2000 to preserve the history and heritage of the canals, towpaths, bridges, buildings and structures and eventually open the canal from Shrewsbury to Newport. AIMS OF THE TRUST
To protect, conserve and improve the route of the Shrewsbury and Newport canals and branches for the benefit of the community and the environment, with the ultimate goal of restoring a continuous navigable waterway linking the 25 miles from Norbury Junction to Shrewsbury

OBJECTIVES OF THE TRUST
- to convince local authorities, government departments and local organisations of the benefits and feasibility of the proposed restoration
- to convince landowners, local commerce and the general public of the merits of restoration
- to secure the route of the waterway and adequate water supplies
- to develop partnerships with local authorities and other bodies that will facilitate restoration of the canals
- to implement an agreed programme for full restoration of the canal and associated buildings

In the news again....

A new mural at Wappenshall Wharf, celebrating the site’s role in the Industrial Revolution and paying homage to the great engineer Thomas Telford, has had a major impact on visitor numbers.

We now have a range of merchandise for sale at our community cafe, the The Welldeck at Wappenshall Wharf, including clothing, mugs, coasters, aprons, prints and a range of gins- full-sized bottles or miniatures which we can box up in threes for £20.

Clothing is also available including fleeces, Polo Shirts, T-shirts, and Baseball caps. The fleece sizes are good quality, quite generous, incredibly thick, and they have 2 zip pockets. Great for any outdoor work when you need a bit of warmth.

With two storms this week, our Wappenshall volunteers used the drier, calmer mornings to do outside work, but then moved to doing inside work in the afternoons.

It is with great sadness that we have to announce the passing of one of our dedicated, long-standing volunteers, Alan Boney. Alan was always looking for ways to support the Trust, introducing us to Easy Fundraising and Twincel and raising funds for the restoration of Bainton and Berkhampstead, our historic boats.

He and fellow volunteers Peter Rawlings and Head of Customer Engagement, Winter the Cat, sold Bric-a-Brac most Saturdays at Norbury Wharf Ltd, and Alan also initiated our fundraising events at the Newport Navy Club, arranging everything from galvanising the rest of us to donate or volunteer on the day to collecting items for the sale.

Alan was such a gentleman; he was much loved and will be truly missed. If any members or volunteers want the details of Alan's funeral, please message us.

We have had lots of super publicity from the official unveiling of our mural, funded by The National Lottery Community Fund and so superbly executed by Adan, Inkversion Mural Artist. From Midlands Today to BBC Shropshire Radio, BBC Online and The Shropshire Star. If you want to read more in depth about the history of Wappenshall Wharf, see this article.

The Welldeck at Wappenshall Wharf has certainly noticed an uplift in visitors who have also been admiring the Wappenshall Wharf Community Garden in the sunshine this weekend.

Wappenshall Wharf allowed goods made in the Ironbridge Gorge to be transported across the country.
