**We cannot offer support on our page**

Every day, Samaritans volunteers answer around 10,000 calls for help. In prisons, schools, hospitals and on the rail network, Samaritans are working with people who are going through a difficult time and training others to do the same. Samaritans is here for anyone who needs to talk, and weโ€™d like our page to be a supportive, kind, and positive spa

ce. To ensure this happens, we have a couple of guidelines in place:

๐Ÿ’š Be kind

๐Ÿ’š Be sympathetic to, and mindful of, other peopleโ€™s feelings.

๐Ÿ’š Be tolerant and respectful of other peopleโ€™s beliefs and please think before you comment anything that might upset someone - we're all here to support each other. If you do see any comments which you think are against this in any way, please report them.

โŒ Offensive language/behaviour

We won't tolerate disrespectful, offensive, or abusive comments, and they will be removed from the page along with the author of the comment.

We would like to say a huge thank you to Gill and her team at the Holy Trinity Church, Much Wenlock. Their monthly soup kitchen event in May raised an amazing ยฃ305 for Telford Samaritans! Thank you so much! ๐Ÿ’š

If you are over that way we would encourage you to drop in and see them! The kitchen runs every second Tuesday of each month between midday and 1.30pm and they have three delicious soups to chose from served with crusty bread, cheese and biscuits plus a hot drink, all for a donation ๐Ÿ’š

Being Fundraising Director for Telford Samaritans means far more to me than organising events or raising money. It is about bringing people together, building community spirit, and helping ensure that nobody has to face lifeโ€™s toughest moments alone. As an independent charity, every pound we raise locally truly matters, and I take great pride in helping keep our branch strong, visible, and able to continue providing vital emotional support across Telford.

My role is a blend of creativity, determination, organisation, and heart. One day I may be planning fundraising events, speaking with local businesses, or setting up awareness stalls, and the next I could be developing new fundraising ideas, supporting volunteers, or finding ways to make our campaigns more engaging and inclusive. I love adding personality and energy into everything we do because fundraising should feel genuine, welcoming, and connected to the people we help.

For me, this role is deeply personal. I care passionately about mental health awareness, encouraging open conversations, and helping our branch grow so we can continue making a real difference within the community. If fundraising had a survival kit, mine would definitely include Pepsi Max, chocolate, determination, and about seventeen colour-coded spreadsheets keeping the chaos under control. ๐Ÿฅค๐Ÿซโœจ

Volunteering in the Samaritans charity shop has become something I genuinely enjoy and look forward to each week. It is not just about selling donated items โ€” it is about being part of a friendly environment where people can come in for a chat, find something special, or simply feel welcomed. Knowing that the shop helps support such an important cause makes even the smallest jobs feel worthwhile.

No two days in the shop are ever the same, which is one of the things I enjoy most. Some days I am organising stock, pricing donations, or helping create displays, while other days are spent serving customers and working alongside the rest of the volunteer team to keep everything running smoothly. I have really enjoyed building confidence, meeting new people, and learning how much work goes on behind the scenes to keep the shop busy and inviting.

What makes the role special to me is the sense of community around it. Everyone brings something different, and there is always a supportive atmosphere, whether we are rushed off our feet or having a laugh while sorting through donations. Being able to give my time to something that helps others feels rewarding, and I am proud to play a small part in supporting the work Samaritans does. My charity shop essentials would probably be comfortable shoes, plenty of coat hangers, a good playlist in the background, and snacks for the busy shifts.

Being part of the Samaritans was never something I planned on doingโ€ฆ but now that Iโ€™m here, Iโ€™m so glad I did!

As the Branch Secretary, it has allowed me to volunteer without taking phone calls. On paper, my role is focused on meeting management and administration, which might sound a bit dullโ€”but itโ€™s far from it! The leadership team has really supported me in getting involved in all sorts of things, from fundraising, to supporting events like someone shaving their head for charity, to helping decorate the branchโ€ฆthe list really does go on!

Knowing that by organising meetings, taking minutes, or even ordering the pens, Iโ€™m helping the listening volunteers do what they do best, listen, makes it all worthwhile. There are so many roles with in this charity that play a huge part in making it run, so if you donโ€™t want to be a listening volunteer there is plenty to get involved in.

Mental health has a sometimes negative stigma around it & I donโ€™t think it should, in life we all have our struggles & you never really know what someone else is going through.

The Telford branch have welcomed be with open arms and I couldnโ€™t thank them enough I have met some truly amazing people ๐Ÿ’š

Volunteering as a bookkeeper for Samaritans may only take up a few hours of my month, but it is something I really value being part of. Even in a small role, it feels good knowing I can use my time and skills to help support a charity that provides such important support to people who need it most.

My role mainly involves helping keep financial records organised and up to date. This can include checking figures, updating spreadsheets, and making sure information is recorded accurately. It is not the most visible role within the branch, but I enjoy being able to contribute in a practical way and help things run smoothly behind the scenes.

What I like most about volunteering in this role is that even a few hours can still make a difference. Everyone contributes in their own way, and it is rewarding knowing that the work I do helps support the wider efforts of the volunteer team. My bookkeeping essentials would probably be a calculator, a good cup of tea, and double-checking everything at least twice before calling it finished.

Todays Volunteer Voice is from one of our experienced Listening Volunteers who's role is based at Stoke Heath Prison ๐Ÿ’š

I volunteer with the Samaritans Listener Scheme at Stoke Heath Prison, where I help train and support prisoners to become Listeners. The Listener Scheme is a peer-support service that allows prisoners to provide confidential emotional support to others who may be struggling with isolation, anxiety, mental health difficulties, self-harm thoughts, or the pressures of prison life.

The role of a Listener is entirely voluntary, and prisoners choose to take on the responsibility of supporting others within the prison community. Once trained, Listeners are placed on a 24-hour rota system, meaning they can be called upon at any time, day or night, to support another prisoner in distress. This level of commitment demonstrates the trust placed in them and the importance of the service within the prison environment.

My role involves helping prisoners develop the communication and listening skills needed to support others safely and compassionately. This includes guidance around active listening, empathy, confidentiality, emotional resilience, and maintaining professional boundaries. I work closely with prisoners throughout their training and continue supporting them once they become active Listeners within the prison.
A major part of the role is building trust and encouraging individuals to feel confident in supporting their peers without judgement. Many prisoners involved in the scheme gain a sense of purpose, responsibility, and self-worth through the work they do. Seeing people grow in confidence and make a positive difference to others is one of the most rewarding aspects of the role.

The work can be emotionally challenging due to the nature of the conversations and the realities of prison life, but it is also incredibly meaningful. The Listener Scheme provides vital support for vulnerable prisoners and helps create a safer, more compassionate environment within the prison community making life easier and more bearable and I am extremely proud to be part of the scheme ๐Ÿ’š

I have been a listening volunteer with Telford Samaritans now for just under 5yrs.

I joined after a long career as a nurse specialising in the busy area of Trauma & Orthopaedics and sadly at just 40yrs old, ill health meant I had to take early medical retirement. After spending a few years getting my health under control it was suggested to me (nicely) I was wasting my training and Samaritans was mentioned and it was like a light bulb went off, almost 5yrs later here I am.

I feel hugely privileged to be a Listening volunteer and to be there for people who really feel they need someone just to listen to them and people who feel they have noone to talk to.

I have listened to people laugh, cry and everything in between, I have listened to people at their absolute lowest point when they feel like there is no hope.

Being a listening volunteer is not an easy role, it tests me on an almost daily basis, but I now couldn't imagine doing anything else ๐Ÿ’š
