Our mission statement

This group was set up to try and save what is left of Swindon's heritage, our interest is not only in preserving heritage buildings, but ensuring they are developed for, and made accessible to, the local community, in the widest possible sense.

Many of the buildings which have not met the fate of the wrecking ball have been sold to developers for residential use which unless you live there you will never have access to. Our Carriage Works is presently being converted into office space, which if you are not a business you will not get to enjoy.

There are also plans to convert the Mechanics into an educational use - most likely a University, which if realised will have far reaching implications for our town and I believe represents a sad and lacklustre use of one of the most iconic buildings in Swindon.

This group shares old pictures of Swindon (legally) to remind everyone of what a beautiful town we once had and whilst I appreciate we cannot right the wrongs of yesterday, we hope that enough of Swindon's residents will see what we have lost and take an active interest in preserving what is left.

I am a Swindonian and my family have been here for generations, but you don't have to be a Swindonian to recognise that what makes a town special and worthwhile is its history - and Swindon can boast a lot, not least of which is the Great Western Railway & our Health Hydro the birthplace of the NHS.

All I ask is that we show our town some love and stop repeatedly making the mistakes of the past. The town can't take any more destruction and waste for the promise of 'progress' driven by demolishing the past in favour of a 'new' that never delivers.

We must challenge the council plans that do not include a respectful and public use of our heritage buildings and hold them to account when they neglect their duty in preserving our rich heritage that belongs to everyone in Swindon. To demand public consultation and a decision process that is transparent and inclusive of the public and the wider heritage community.

There is no doubt in my mind that the people of Swindon value our heritage and judging from the sheer number of heritage pledges I have seen on party political leaflets recently, it is obvious that the towns politicians are waking up to this fact.

This group can change things for the better by speaking out and taking action and together we can save our heritage and put it where it belongs – front and centre!
