We’ve been campaigning for change in how mental health services are organised and we’re so excited to see these results launched.

Open Dialogue is a relational approach that involves a person’s support network, relevant family members, friends and others that they trust.

The trial results published in the Lancet found that Open Dialogues improves recovery, quality of life and satisfaction. It found that those receiving help through the Open Dialogue were:
💡3 x less likely to be admitted to hospital
💡If they we’re admitted they spent 54% less time in hospital
💡And were half as likely to be referred to crisis teams.

This approach will strengthen the Open Access same day approach already being rolled out here in Wales.

The ODDESSI trial is another piece of solid evidence that we need to step towards a system that recognises the impact of our experiences, our circumstances, and the human interconnections around us.

Dr Jen Daffin shares her thoughts in her blog https://platfform.org/mental-health/treatment-focused-on-connection-and-relational-health-cuts-mental-health-hospital-admissions/

Your leaders and managers shape how your people feel at work every day.

How they handle a mistake. Whether they notice someone struggling. How they show up when things are challenging. These small moments add up to whether a team feels safe and able to do their best work.

That's why we developed our expert-led Compassionate Leadership training, to upskill leaders to create the conditions for their teams to thrive: driving higher performance, stronger working relationships and keeping great people

This is an open course, so leaders from different sectors and workplaces learn side by side, bringing a genuine mix of perspective and real-world experience into the room.

📅 6 in-person days · Cardiff
🗓️ Monthly · Nov 2026 to Apr 2027
💬 Plus 3 online reflective sessions

At Platfform we believe that connection only happens when we listen closely, with curiosity. This applies to how we deliver services as well as in our conversations with stakeholders.

Through our work delivering services we can face unhelpful and even toxic interactions. There's an increasing trend where charity workers are being targeted online because of what they do. This is not acceptable.

We should all feel safe to hold healthy, informed debates.

We support WCVA CGGC's call to Challenge the policy. Debate the position. Test the evidence.

Read more in the blog where Dr Lindsay Cordery-Bruce, WCVA’s Chief Executive, argues that scrutiny is essential, but targeting people who work for voluntary organisations threatens the public debate on which democracy depends.

"It's a privilege to work with people when they need help, and to know that we help re-build lives. Services like Tŷ Cynnal are vital to help people's mental health, providing support and preventing challenges from getting worse." said Chloe-Jo Morgan who manages Tŷ Cynnal.

Natasha Asghar MS for Newport and Islwyn, visited Tŷ Cynnal recently and praised its therapeutic model as a valuable alternative to hospital services. During her visit, Ms Asghar discussed the potential for expanding the scheme, run in partnership with Aneurin Bevan University Health Board, with Platfform’s head of policy and influencing, David Rowlands, and Tŷ Cynnal manager Chloe-Jo Morgan.

Ty Cynnal and how support houses provide a space for people where they can, with staff alongside them, think about what support is helpful, and allow the opportunity to connect, take time out and be heard.

Mental health is a social justice issue.

Poor housing, inequality, poverty and exclusion largely determine and can lead to poor mental health. What we often label as “mental illness” is, in many cases, a completely understandable response to adversity, trauma and lived experience.

If we continue to create the conditions that make people unwell, demand for services will always outstrip supply — no matter how much we invest in treatment.

Ewan Hilton, Chief Executive at Platfform blogs about re-imagining mental health, see link in comments
