1st October….• National Poetry Day We’ve done the planning, so you can get straight to the wonder.

Our FREE National Poetry Day resources include curriculum-linked lesson plans and classroom activities for ages 3 to 16+. Fully embracing our theme of Wonder, they’ve been created by curriculum experts, designed to work across subjects and made ready to print and teach with minimal preparation.

• Freelands Foundation 💻 make online: practice and authenticity | Thursday 10 September 2026, 6.30 – 7.30pm BST

What determines the validity of a site for making and displaying art?

Join us for the next session of make online, where four speakers will challenge preconceived notions of authenticity in artistic practice and education.

Drawing from a range of diverse artistic contexts, each speaker will explore a project, approach or practice that offers a new way of thinking about authenticity and validity in artmaking – in quick-fire presentations of 10 minutes or less.

🟣 Dan Goodman () on the redistribution of curatorial authority through collaborative exhibition-making

🟣 Victoria Gray on the benefits of peer-led mentorship between neurodiverse artists and students

🟣 Kath Tindale () on supporting students to find a sense of their own artistic authenticity through process-based methods

make online is a series of sessions where teachers, artist teachers, art educators and artists present and share ideas, skills, resources and practical knowledge.

Sometimes life can feel overwhelming, and it can be difficult for young people to talk about how they’re feeling. That’s where Washington Mind’s Young People’s Project can help.

We offer free, confidential one-to-one counselling for young people aged 11–18, giving them a safe space to talk, be heard and get support with the challenges they may be facing.

Referrals can be made by parents, carers, schools, professionals who work with young people, or by young people themselves.

Are you a school in Sunderland? Have you got famous alumni? Nominate now!!!

• The 93% Club It’s time to make history. We’re announcing the UK’s biggest celebration of state schoolers.

Private schools are steeped in heritage. Their students are taught that great people have come before them, and they can see this history in their famous alumni. We talk about them often.

For the state schoolers, however, we’re taught that our successes are the exception to the rule. We are made to feel few and far between. That’s a problem for the next generation because you can’t be what you can’t see.

We’re changing that.

We know that state schools have produced some of our proudest success stories. Actors, musicians, scientists, activists, authors, pioneers. We have driven change and defined culture. And every state educated child should know that.

This Autumn, we’re putting red plaques on school gates across the UK to give state schoolers their own slice of history. And we want you to tell us who should get one.

Calling all teachers…

• Cathy 🍎 Pre-K Teacher + Child Development Nerd Process art is not a craft. And once you see the difference, you can’t unsee it.

A craft has a model to copy and one right answer. A worksheet has a line to trace. “Copy my drawing” has a correct version, and it is mine. Every one of those teaches a child to match an adult’s example.

Process art teaches the opposite. There is no template, no model, no wrong way. And that single shift changes the entire set of skills a child is building.

With nothing to copy, they have to generate their own ideas, which is divergent thinking. Choosing the colors and deciding when it is done builds autonomy, what Erikson named as the core work of early childhood.

Mixing and testing is real experimentation. And because the work is theirs, not made to please me, the motivation comes from inside, where it actually lasts.

So I give them the materials, not the model. Then I notice, name, and nurture what they do with them.

• We Make Culture 🎶 YMP x Right Track Crossover 🎶

This summer, we’re bringing together Young Musicians Project and Right Track for a unique two-day collaboration, giving young musicians the chance to connect, create, and experience different music opportunities across Sunderland.

Across two exciting days, you’ll explore professional recording studios, collaborate on songwriting, take part in recording sessions, enjoy a singing workshop with Laura Taylor, record with Tony Brown, and much more!

📍 7th August, 10am–3pm: Arts Centre Washington Recording Studio
📍 8th August, 10am–3pm: Field Music Studios

👉 Open to current YMP and Right Track members.

What fun…

• Music Connects Sunderland Aged 7 to 18 and love to sing?

Come and join us on Tuesday 4th August Arts Centre Washington to sing and record our song ‘Sunderland Sings Together’.

The song was cowritten by Sunderland Youth Choir and Calum Howard for our annual ‘Sunderland Sings’ event at Sunderland Empire Theatre

Thanks to Sunderland Music City for helping to make it happen!
