Seashell Seashell is a charity transforming the lives of disabled children and young adults with the most complex needs.

Seashell is dedicated to providing a creative, happy and secure environment for children and young people with complex learning disabilities and additional communication needs. Seashell offers a holistic approach with Seashell Royal School Manchester, Seashell Royal College Manchester, our 17 home-from-home care houses and our sports, health and wellbeing offer. Seashell focuses on the extended family that cares for each one of our students and residents and about the difference that can be made to all those connected lives. We strive to include the whole family and the wider community in the life experience of our children and young people.

Did you know we have two Short Breaks houses on campus?

Our mascot Buddy enjoyed getting to know the space during a tour with Registered Manager Jenny, where they got to see all the fantastic facilities.

We have soft play rooms, themed bedrooms and an outdoor garden space. We’re very proud of our service and we love seeing what our Short Breaks residents get up to, both on and off campus.

Keep an eye on our socials for photos from fun activities!

Want to ride for Seashell? We're once again a charity partner for the 2027 TourdeManc!

Danny and Alastair from the TDM team came down to our campus this week to present us with an incredible cheque for £4,500 from this year's ride.

As you can see, they had lots of fun seeing what Seashell has to offer, including our Learn to Ride cycle track and our amazing sensory swing. College student Tin also joined in the fun while out on a cycle!

We're so grateful for their ongoing support and commitment to supporting disabled children and young adults to achieve their full potential.

If you've been thinking of taking on a challenge, you can join Team Seashell at next year's Tour De Manc and help make a real difference: https://www.seashelltrust.org.uk/fundraising/challenge-events/

Stockport Tri Club have kindly donated £300 for sports equipment!

The money will be used to buy more climbing harnesses to support children and young people to use our accessible climbing wall.

Our very own Learning Support Assistant Susie [pictured in the middle of the last photo] is part of the Tri-Club, and was delighted to support us with their fundraising efforts. Many thanks to Susie and the whole club!

“Rebound gives Poppie the opportunity to experience what her body can do, rather than being defined by what she cannot do.”

Rebound therapy uses trampolines and specialised physiotherapy techniques to support with elements like core strength, balance, circulatory health, and emotional dysregulation.

Royal School Manchester student Poppie has 1-1 sessions in the Beaverbrooks Rebound Suite every week. As Poppie is blind, the sessions support her to understand how her body moves through space, giving her an opportunity to explore balance and body awareness without relying on her vision.

“The repetitive movement has a noticeable calming effect and gives her a positive way of managing her sensory needs,” said Jane, Poppie’s aunt.

“Trampolining gives Poppie something that every child should have – the freedom to have fun, be active and participate in an activity because she genuinely enjoys it.”

Assistive Technology can be life-changing for young people with complex needs.

Our Assistive Technologists use a range of devices to support students to communicate, develop new skills and prepare them for adulthood. Today we want to show you our amazing Immersive Space!

Students can immerse themselves in interactive play by using the projector, connecting their tablets to the screen, and using the floor projection system.

“Games like these promote active choice-making with activities the student enjoys, such as singing and spelling,” said Pete, Assistive Technologist HLTA.

“They also support students to engage independently, hold attention and share turn-taking with peers.”

One student enjoyed singing his favourite song, Old McDonald, while sharing turns with Pete to choose each animal at the farm. Ee-i-ee-i-oh!

“Eight incredible days, six days climbing and nearly two days descending … we pushed ourselves to the limit and made memories we’ll never forget!”

Supporters Charlotte and Jo successfully summited Mount Kilimanjaro last month in aid of Seashell, raising an amazing £2,900. We invited them both to our site last week to see first-hand the work their fundraising will support.

“What started as our bucket-list adventure quickly became an opportunity to give something back to an amazing charity,” they said

“We were fully welcomed and saw the inspiring staff and students engaging in some incredible activities on our return.

“Completing this challenge has inspired us to raise even more, so we’re already considering our next adventure!”

Our Life Skills Rooms support students to learn the basics of cooking and food hygiene, fostering independence and skills for life.

Come with us to see one of the sessions in action, where students made tasty iced cookies and heartwarming vegetable soup by following a step-by-step visual recipe.

Once the cookies were ready, students held a community café in the Heart Space where friends were invited to try them out and enjoy some hot and cold drinks.

Jess, Cooking and Life Skills Teaching Assistant, said: "The community café provides a real-life purpose to learning, where students can serve others, practise communication skills, and experience the pride of sharing something they have created with peers!"

Take note: we've bought 16 new instruments, including keyboards, guitars, ukuleles, steel drums and tambourines for young people to use!

The instruments were bought thanks to a £1,500 donation from Tesco Stronger Starts, which was awarded to Seashell's CADS programme after customers voted for us with their blue tokens.

"Music can be a powerful tool for emotional regulation, and playing instruments can support communication, social interaction and developing motor skills," said Mariyah, CADS Development Officer.
