It was great to join up with Durham County Carers Support, Alzheimer's Society and Jubilee Fields Community Centre today as we all came together to provide information, advice, and support for local residents. 🤝

By working in partnership, we can help strengthen community resilience, support unpaid carers, improve wellbeing, and ensure people across County Durham can access the services and support they need.

Final Day of Carers Week – Friday’s Locations 💙
As we wrap up an amazing week of celebrating and supporting unpaid Carers, we’ll be out in:

📍 Durham
📍 University Hospital North Durham
📍 Shildon

A massive thank you to everyone who hosted an event, opened their doors, and took the time to come along. Your support has made this week so special.

Carers do so much for the people they look after, for communities, and for society as a whole. That kind of dedication absolutely deserves a full week of recognition, connection, and celebration. 💐

Let’s keep the conversation going all year round!

We are thrilled to have been one of 7 Carer Support services across the Northeast and Tees Valley to have organised this event yesterday. It was a hugely positive step forward with many more Carer Support services, Local Authorities, NHS Integrated Care Board, Northeast Mayoral Strategic Authority and several local MPs signing the Commitment to Carers document and making pledges to improve support for unpaid Carers.

Newcastle Carers says there are about 286,000 people providing unpaid care across the North East.

Today we are joined by lots of organisations across the region to talk about the north east and north Cumbria commitment to Carers.

We have pledges from many partners to support Carers and ensure they get the support they need and have their voices heard

Thank you to all those who are supporting this 🤝

Often people don’t recognise themselves as Carers. They say...

“It’s just what I do.”
“It’s only a few things.”
“I’m just helping out.”

But if you’re:

• Prompting someone to take medication
• Helping with washing, dressing or meals
• Managing appointments and prescriptions
• Calling in after work to make sure they’re safe
• Supporting someone emotionally when their health is changing
• Losing sleep because you’re worrying about them

You are carrying caring responsibilities.

And caring doesn’t just affect your time. It can have an emotional impact, a financial impact, and sometimes a quiet sense that you’ve lost control of your own life while trying to hold someone else’s together.

We hear Carers say they feel stretched, overwhelmed, exhausted - and unsure where they fit in the middle of it all.

At Durham County Carers, we understand those pressures. And we’re here to support you as well as the person you care for.

We can help with:

💙 Emergency planning - so you have a plan if something unexpected happens
💙 Identifying benefits or financial support you may be entitled to
💙 Counselling and emotional wellbeing support
💙 Local support groups where you can connect with others who understand
💙 Training and information to build confidence
💙 A listening ear when things feel heavy

You don’t need to reach breaking point.
You don’t need to have all the answers.
You don’t even need to be sure you “count” as a Carer.

If any of this sounds familiar, a conversation could make things feel more manageable.

Support is there - and you deserve it too. 💙
