5th Canvey Island Air Scout Group 5th Canvey Air Scout Group Beaver Scouts is for ages 5 3/4 to 8, Cub Scouts for ages 7 1/2 to 11 and Scouts for ages 10 1/2 to 14.

5th Canvey Island Air Scout Group meets on Thursday nights at Lakeview Hall, in Wintergardens Academy, Hilton Road, and is open to girls and boys. We also have a partnership agreement with Night Hawk Air Explorers which enables our young people to carry on scouting up to the age of 18.

5th Canvey was formed on October 1st, 1982 and achieved RAF recognition in 2008. This gives another level of interest for the young people, but does however mean we expect a high level of commitment, discipline and uniform. If you are interested in joining the group, please fill in the form on our webpage, or simply come along on a Thursday night and meet the team.

🐿️ MEET THE TEAM - 10 QUESTIONS WITH CHERRY! 💜

Following the fantastic response to our recent volunteer Q&A, we thought we’d introduce you to another member of our leadership team!

This time we’re chatting with Lyndsey, known to our young people as Cherry, our Squirrel Team Leader at 5th Canvey Island Air Scouts.

Now, some of you will know that Lyndsey is also my wife! As well as leading our Squirrel section and helping out with Beavers, she’s a huge support to me in my role running the Group.

There’s an awful lot that goes on behind the scenes at 5th Canvey, and Lyndsey is always there to offer advice, help out, listen to my ideas (and occasionally my frustrations!) and generally keep me going. Scouting takes up a fair bit of our family life, and I certainly couldn’t do what I do without her support.

But enough from me! Lyndsey has been volunteering with us for over 10 years, so we asked her about her experiences, what keeps her coming back and what she’d say to someone thinking about joining our team.

💬 1. How did you first get involved in Scouting?

I actually started off as a parent on the Group Committee. A friend then asked if I’d help out at Beavers, and that was over 10 years ago! I’m still here! 😂

💬 2. You’re now our Squirrel Team Leader. What’s the best thing about working with our youngest members?

I worked in childcare for many years, mainly with this age group, so it’s something I’ve always enjoyed.

I love watching their personalities develop. At 4 to 6 years old, they’re all so different, and it’s lovely seeing them grow in confidence and come out of their shells.

💬 3. What’s been one of your proudest moments in Scouting?

Definitely seeing our very first group of Squirrels achieve their Chief Scout’s Acorn Awards.

Watching those little ones work towards something and achieve it is such a proud moment, both for them and for us as leaders.

💬 4. What would you say to someone who thinks they don’t have the skills to volunteer?

We all have our own strengths!

You might not realise it, but I’m sure you’ll have skills that would be useful to our Group. Nobody is expected to be good at everything. We all bring something different to the team.

💬 5. Have you ever had one of those days where you’ve wondered why you volunteer?

YES!! 😂

Scouting can be tiring, especially when you’ve already had a busy day.

But then you see the children’s smiles, watch them achieve something they’ve been working towards, and it reminds you why you do it.

💬 6. What’s one of your funniest memories from Scouting?

Watching the leaders scream more than the kids on the rides at Disneyland Paris! 😂🎢

I think some of the adults were more terrified than the children! It’s not just the young people who have fun on our adventures!

💬 7. What’s the adult volunteer team like at 5th Canvey?

We have a fab team at 5th Canvey, both new and old!

We’ve been friends with many of our fellow volunteers for years. It’s a really lovely group of people, and there’s a great sense of friendship within the team.

💬 8. How do you find the time to volunteer alongside everything else in life?

Scouting does take up a lot of our time, I’m not going to pretend it doesn’t!

But that’s why having more volunteers is so important. The more people we have helping, the more we can share the workload.

You don’t have to give up all your spare time. Just give as much as you can. Every bit of help makes a difference.

💬 9. What would you say to someone who’s nervous about coming along for the first time?

Don’t be nervous!

We’re a very welcoming group with volunteers of all different ages.

Just pop along, meet everyone and get a feel for the Group. There’s no need to worry about knowing everything or having loads of experience.

💬 10. Finally, why do you continue to give your time to 5th Canvey, and why should someone else consider it?

My own children got so much out of Scouting, and that’s a big reason why I give my time back to the Group.

It’s so rewarding watching the children learn new things, grow in confidence and achieve things they might never have thought they could do.

Knowing you’ve played a little part in that makes it all worthwhile. 💜

⚜️ COULD YOU BE PART OF OUR TEAM?

Lyndsey’s story is a great example of how volunteering often begins. A parent helping out, a friend asking for a hand, or someone simply deciding to give it a try.

Before you know it, you’re making memories, building friendships and helping young people achieve amazing things.

At 5th Canvey Island Air Scouts, we’re currently looking for more adult volunteers, particularly to support our Squirrel and Cub sections.

✅ No previous Scouting experience needed

✅ Free DBS checks and training provided

✅ Friendly, supportive team

✅ Flexible volunteering - give the time you can

✅ The chance to make a genuine difference to local young people

You don’t need to be an expert. You just need to be willing to give it a go!

📩 Drop us a message if you’re interested. We’d love to invite you along for a chat, show you what we do and introduce you to the team.

Who knows, you might still be here in 10 years, just like Lyndsey! 😂🐿️

⚜️ EVER WONDERED WHAT IT’S LIKE TO VOLUNTEER WITH SCOUTS?

We’re always looking for new volunteers at 5th Canvey Island Air Scouts, but we know that taking that first step can be a bit daunting.

So we thought we’d put our Group Lead Volunteer, George, in the hot seat and ask him a few questions about what volunteering is really like. The good bits, the challenges and why he keeps coming back for more! 😂

Q: First things first, why on earth do you give up so much of your spare time to run a Scout Group?

George: I often ask myself that very question! 😂

But seriously, it’s incredibly rewarding. You get to see the difference you’re making to young people’s lives, watching them grow in confidence, learn new skills and achieve things they didn’t think they could.

And it’s not just about the young people. We’ve built a fantastic team of adult volunteers, had some great laughs along the way and made some really good friendships.

Yes, it takes up a lot of time, but I wouldn’t still be doing it if I didn’t enjoy it!

Q: Have you ever seriously considered giving it all up?

George: Absolutely! I think most volunteers have at some point, if they’re honest.

There are times when you’re exhausted, motivation is running low and you wonder why you’re putting so much time and effort into it. Sometimes you do feel a bit taken for granted. I think people occasionally forget that we’re all volunteers with jobs, families and lives outside of Scouting.

But then a parent takes the time to say a simple thank you, or you see how much the young people are getting out of it, and it reminds you why you do it.

You’d be surprised how much difference a little appreciation can make.

Q: What’s been your proudest achievement since taking over as Group Lead Volunteer?

George: Without a doubt, seeing how far we’ve brought the Group.

When I took over, the Group was in a pretty bad place. Finances were a real concern, youth membership had dropped significantly, and we were losing adult volunteers and trustees. To be honest, the future of the Group was looking pretty uncertain.

Fast forward to today, and the difference is incredible. We’ve rebuilt the membership, got the finances back on track and have a fantastic team of volunteers.

One of the things I’m most proud of is seeing so many leaders return to the Group, and more importantly, choose to stay.

I certainly can’t take all the credit. It’s been a massive team effort, and I’m incredibly proud of what we’ve achieved together. Seeing the Group thriving again makes all the hard work worthwhile.

Q: Do you need to have been a Scout yourself to become a volunteer?

George: Not at all! We’ve got volunteers who have been involved in Scouting for years and others who had absolutely no experience when they joined.

You don’t need to know how to tie knots, put up a tent or light a campfire. We can teach you all that. And believe me, some of us are still learning! 😂

Q: What’s the biggest misconception people have about volunteering?

George: I think it’s that people assume they wouldn’t be any good at it, or that they haven’t got the right skills or experience.

The reality is, nobody is good at everything, and we certainly don’t expect them to be!

Everyone brings something different to the team. Some people are brilliant at organising things, others are fantastic at coming up with creative activities, some love the outdoors, and others are naturally great at working with young people.

I’m a good example of that. I’ve got my own strengths, but creativity definitely isn’t one of them! 😂 Ask me to organise something or sort out a problem and I’ll happily get stuck in. Ask me to come up with an arts and crafts activity and you’ll probably regret it!

Thankfully, we’ve got people on the team who are brilliant at that sort of thing.

That’s what makes a good team. We all have different strengths, help each other out and between us we make it work.

And you’d be surprised what you learn along the way. You might even discover a talent you never knew you had.

Q: I work full-time and have a family. Surely I haven’t got time to volunteer?

George: I work full-time myself, with some ridiculously early starts, so I completely understand!

Not everyone can give up an evening every week, and that’s fine. There are lots of ways to help, from supporting section meetings to helping at events, camps or behind the scenes.

We’d much rather have someone who can offer a little of their time than someone who doesn’t volunteer at all because they think they can’t commit enough.

Have a chat with us and let’s see what might work for you.

Q: Do I have to go camping and spend my weekends in a muddy field?

George: Absolutely not! Although you might find yourself wanting to once you’ve experienced it.

And don’t worry, we won’t force you to sing campfire songs. Well, probably not! 😂

There’s so much more to Scouting than camping, and plenty of ways to get involved without ever sleeping in a tent.

Q: Finally, what would you say to someone reading this who’s thought about volunteering but hasn’t quite taken that first step?

George: Just come and have a look.

Seriously, there’s no pressure and no obligation. Come along, meet the team, see what we get up to and have a chat.

You don’t need to be an expert, you don’t need loads of spare time and you certainly don’t need to be Bear Grylls!

We’ve got a great bunch of people here, and there’s always room for another.

You might be surprised how much you enjoy it. And if you can make a difference to just one young person’s life along the way, surely that’s time well spent?

What a busy night at Cubs! 💚

Tonight our Cubs worked towards their Home Help badge by learning some brilliant everyday life skills! 🏡✨

They practised changing bedding, sorting laundry, ironing, cleaning windows and trophies, making hot drinks and washing up afterwards ☕🧺🧹

We also got creative sewing buttons to make felt Remembrance poppies 🌺 ready for Remembrance Day.

We also sang happy birthday to Akela who even came to cubs to do ironing on her birthday!🎂 💐

Lots of new skills, teamwork and independence — well done, Cubs! 👏🐾

🌟 This week at Cubs! 🌟

This week, our Cubs had a fantastic time learning more about disabilities and taking part in activities to help us understand some of the challenges people may experience in everyday life.

We explored mobility aids, including crutches, a walking frame and a walking stick. By pretending to have a broken leg, the Cubs experienced how mobility can be affected and how everyday tasks can become more challenging.

🥪 Next up was a blindfolded sandwich-making challenge! This proved much trickier than we expected and gave us an insight into some of the difficulties people with visual impairments may face.

🧩 We also learnt about hidden disabilities, including autism and ADHD, and explored different tools and resources that can help people feel calm, comfortable and supported. The Cubs had great fun trying out a range of fidget toys and sensory resources! 💛

👏 Well done to all our Cubs for their enthusiasm, curiosity and brilliant teamwork. We hope this session has helped everyone develop a greater understanding of disabilities, the importance of inclusion, and how we can all help make the world a more supportive place for everyone! 💙

🚀🌙 Space Explorers! 🪐✨

Tonight, our Squirrels completed their Space Explorer badge! 🌟

We kicked off the evening by finding out what the Squirrels already knew about space, before learning all about astronauts and the important jobs they do. 👩‍🚀👨‍🚀

Then it was time to get creative! 🎨 The Squirrels made their very own comet conkers ☄️, created paper plate moons 🌕 and learnt about the different planets in our solar system. 🪐🌍

What a fantastic evening of exploring, learning and getting creative! Well done, Squirrels, on completing your Space Explorer badge! 🚀💫
