NCI Canvey Island National Coastwatch Institution is a voluntary organisation keeping a visual watch along UK shores.

Based at Canvey Point, keeping a visual watch over the Thames Estuary and the beaches from Leigh-on-sea to Southend Pier as well as Canvey. A voluntary organisation keeping a visual watch along UK shores. As part of the National Coastwatch Institution, NCI Canvey Island's station is staffed entirely by volunteers, providing eyes along the coast in pursuit of the protection and preservation of life at sea and along our coastline.

As seasons start to change with today being the Spring Equinox with daylight becoming longer then darkness the importance of remaining safe when visiting the coast moves up a notch from a HM Coastguard perspective and our team here at HM Coastguard Southend remains on call all year round.

As we start to begin thinking about future beach days, ice cream and sun cream putting away our walking boots and full length wetsuits (Note: respect the water and how cold seas are all through the summer with water not warming up until late summer months!), please remember to take care at the coast and in the water:

🌖 Check weather and tides
🌖 Tell someone where you’re going/when you expect to be back
🌖 Take a fully charged phone
🌖 In trouble in the water? Try to relax, lie back, , think float like a big starfish!
🌖 Don't venture out on the water alone unless your are confident in your ability and have the appropriate safety equipment / measures in place to give you and your loved ones piece of mind
🌖 Avoid off shore winds if heading out on the water on paddle boards
🌖 If you ever see something suspicious or out of the ordinary on the beach or in the sea, do not touch it, move it or take it home

Should you see anyone in trouble on or near the coast or see something suspicious on the beach or in the sea, don’t hesitate to dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard, you could save someone’s life!
