❤️ AJ Café, Britwell Our Community, Our Pride ❤️
We’re delighted to share that Amana’s Journey CIC and AJ Café have been selected to feature in a Pride in Place case study, highlighting the community work already taking place in Britwell.
For eight years, AJ Café has been based in the heart of Britwell, supporting local residents through our community work. We were pleased to share our experience and journey as part of research exploring how Pride in Place can build on existing community initiatives.
Our work goes far beyond the café. Through our food collections, surplus food rescue and redistribution, we help reduce food waste and provide food support to local families and vulnerable residents. We also support people experiencing homelessness and women affected by domestic violence.
We have supported more than 350 families, with over 25 volunteers contributing their time and dedication. Alongside our food support, we run our Warm Space Coffee Morning, Come Dine with Us, where we cook for the community and welcome everyone to come and eat together, and our youth club, which gives young people a voice and opportunities to learn new skills, including podcasting, build confidence and get involved in volunteering. Through these activities, we create opportunities for people to connect, bring the community together, tackle loneliness and isolation, and help residents feel included and valued.
We work alongside local partners and services, including NHS mental health services, SBC and other organisations, who refer residents to us for support. Through these partnerships, we help people access the support they need, connect with opportunities and become more involved in their community.
The case study highlights the importance of existing community organisations, their local knowledge and the trusted relationships they have built over time. As Pride in Place develops in Britwell, we hope that established organisations, volunteers and residents will continue to be consulted, listened to and involved in shaping the neighbourhood’s future. Building on the work already happening locally is essential to creating lasting change.
We’re proud to have had the opportunity to share our journey and the contribution of grassroots community work. A heartfelt thank you to our volunteers, partners, supporters and residents who have stood alongside us and helped make this work possible.
We will continue supporting local families, rescuing and redistributing surplus food, creating opportunities and bringing people together.
