For centuries, students at Al-Azhar lived in riwaqs, halls grouped by where they came from: students from the Maghrib in one, from Turkey in another, from Shaam in another. Endowments set aside by ordinary Muslims and aristocrats paid for their lodging and a daily bread ration, so they could give their days to study.

The people who funded those halls never met most of the students. They still share in every lesson taught since.

Shaykh Ahmed al-Sharif al-Azhari, one of the eminent scholars of al-Azhar University, recounts his first time reading the select Fatawa of Imam Ahmad Rida Khan translated into Arabic. He expresses his astonishment at the oceanic depth of Fatawa Ridawiyya, the likes of which only a Mujadid and Mujtahid Imam can produce.
