This is the official page for the Sittingbourne & Kemsley Light Railway (aka Sittingbourne's Steam Railway).

A narrow gauge industrial railway in Sittingbourne, Kent, UK. Find out more about the Railway or ask questions, if you have some! The Railway is closed until 17th May 2026, then every Sunday & Bank Holiday Monday, plus Wednesdays in the school summer holidays, until the end of September. Specials events:
- Viaduct Reopening Day - 17th May
- Pirate Weekend - 30th/31st May
- Steam & Beer Music Festival - 27/28th June
- Wild West Weekend - 25/26th July
- Wednesdays & Sundays 29th July until Bank Holiday Monday 31st August
- Gala Weekend - 26/27th September

Bookings are open for our Santa Specials - which must be booked in advance - for full information visit www.sklr.net

Fares are £18 for everyone aged over 3 and £12 for under 3s and SKLR Members.

The journey is just 15 minutes each way, but the round-trip is about two hours. Children receive a personalised Christmas Card from Santa and get to choose a gift from the exclusive selection in Santa's Grotto and adults receive seasonal refreshments in the Footplate Cafe.

Don’t forget you can raise money for the Railway through Give As You Live - I’ve been doing this for years and all those pennies add up!

If you join too, you can donate the pennies to the Railway and when you’ve raised £5, Give As You Live will donate £5 too.

The work starts now! We are holding fortnightly Work Weekends to get through the maintenance jobs that couldn’t be carried out during the operating season.

All are welcome - there will be a special induction session for new volunteers on Saturday 17th October. We work 10am-4pm both days of the weekend. Email [email protected] if you are interested in volunteering.

Work will be carried out at Kemsley Down so you will need to bring your own lunch.

Santa Specials bookings are open and some trains are getting busy, so book soon for Santa Specials on the December weekends before Christmas and Wednesday 23rd.

Steam, Diesel & Electric Gala - Diesel out, electric back!

Hunslet 2266 hauling the Chattenden & Upnor Railway coaches to Sittingbourne Viaduct and Clayton battery electric locomotive ‘The Tank II’ takes them back. Fantastic!
