Remembering the 250: The Shildon Railway Institute Memorial 🌹

Did you know the memorial on our main stairwell is a little different from most? Unveiled on 8th November 1921, it honours not only the 30 Institute members who gave their lives in WWI, but also lists 220 members who served and returned—including local volunteer nurses whose contributions are often overlooked.

Back in 2020, our Chair Dave Reynolds, spent over 13 hours carefully removing years of dirt from the memorial. That work sparked a larger mission: going beyond the initials and surnames to uncover the real lives and stories of all 250 men and women named.

Through the work of a study group assembled by Shildon Heritage Alliance, we discovered just how diverse our Institute family was back in the 1910s.

Far from being exclusively for railway workers, our members included coal miners, teachers, shopkeepers, and career soldiers—many sharing surnames with families still living in Shildon today.

We're delighted to announce that Shildon Railway Institute has secured £769,771 to undertake urgent repairs to its historic Grade II listed building.

The Institute is one of just 20 projects across England to receive support through Historic England's £75 million Heritage at Risk Capital Fund, funded by the UK Government.

The project is being funded by Historic England’s Heritage At Risk Capital Fund grant programme. The programme supports the repair and conservation of historic buildings, helping secure their long term future and enabling them to play a continuing role in the life of their communities.

Together with support from Durham County Council's Towns and Villages Investment Programme, this investment will help safeguard a cherished community asset, create pride in place and secure the future of the Institute for generations to come.
