Rescue at Chertsey Meads!

Last week, we were called out to Chertsey Meads to help a swan who may have flown into overhead power cables.

Thankfully, the swan was soon rescued and brought back to the Swan Sanctuary for treatment and observation.

He is now receiving the care he needs, and if all goes well, we hope to be able to release him back into the wild very soon.🦢🩷

This goose was spotted by the team at Islington Boat Club with a fishing hook embedded in its eyelid.

Andy Miller went over to help, but by the time he arrived, one of the ladies at the club had already managed to catch the goose and was gently cradling it on her paddleboard.

Andy soon got the goose safely on its way to the sanctuary, where the fishing hook was carefully removed.

Thankfully, the area around the eye has made a great recovery, and we’re hopeful it won’t be long before this lovely goose can return home!

On the 3rd september, while already on her way to the Swan Sanctuary, Gill Walker received a call about a poorly swan in Harpenden.

When Gill arrived, she found the cob (male swan) of the family collapsed and suffering from botulism. Thankfully, Taylor and Charlie were there, keeping him safe while help was on its way.

Gill brought him straight back to the Swan Sanctuary for emergency treatment. Thankfully, his treatment went well, and yesterday Gill was finally able to relocate him back to his family.

They all looked so pleased to be reunited!

A huge thank you to Taylor and Charlie for keeping him safe, and to Gill for getting him the urgent care he needed. Another lovely reminder of how teamwork and dedication can make such a difference to our swans. 🦢🩷

11 OILED SWANS RESCUED IN KINGSTON!

On Saturday morning, Sarah, one of our rescuers in Kingston, contacted us after discovering a group of swans covered in oil.

Lisa and Ian headed out to assess the situation, where they found that Sarah and her friend had done a fantastic job of keeping all 11 swans together while waiting for help. This made the rescue much easier, and thankfully, all 11 swans were safely loaded into the van and transported back to The Swan Sanctuary.

All of the swans had a strong smell of cooking oil, but thankfully, they do not appear to have been badly affected. For now, our hope is that they will be able to clean themselves naturally in one of our pools.

This process can take time, and we will be keeping a close eye on their progress. If any of the swans are not cleaning up as they should, they may need some extra help with careful hand-washing.

This gorgeous gannet was transferred to us by Wildlife Aid after being found unwell.

After spending a few days in our care, he’s looking much brighter, which is lovely to see!

We’re now transferring him to Moyles Court Wildlife Rescue, who specialise in the care of seabirds and will be better equipped to provide him with the specialist care he needs.

A huge thank you to Wildlife Aid for getting him the help he needed, and to Moyles Court Wildlife Rescue for taking over his care. We’re keeping our fingers crossed for a full recovery and, hopefully, a return to the wild!

This swan found itself in a territorial dispute with a resident pair of swans at Hampton Court. Driven away from the area, the swan was left wandering along the riverside pathway, vulnerable and in need of help.

Thankfully, a kind member of the public spotted the swan and contacted us, giving our team the opportunity to step in and get it safely to The Swan Sanctuary.

Once safely in our care, the swan was given a thorough check-over. It soon became clear that the swan had a bad eye, which will require treatment.

The swan will now remain at the sanctuary while we provide the care and attention needed to help with its recovery.

We received a call from Hampton Water Treatment Works after an injured cygnet was spotted in an empty water bed.

Our team quickly set out and safely rescued the cygnet and brought it straight back to The Swan Sanctuary for a thorough check-up with our vet.

On examination, the cygnet was found to have a slight scrape on its leg, but the good news was that it was otherwise in good health!

A big thank you to the team at Hampton Water Treatment Works for contacting us and helping to ensure this cygnet got the care it needed.

Homecoming for the Barnes Pond Swans

At the beginning of July, the swan family at Barnes Pond was struck by botulism, tragically losing three of their cygnets and their dad.

The Swan Sanctuary stepped in to help the surviving cygnet and its mum, taking them into care for essential treatment and rehabilitation.

It has been a long road to recovery, with time, patience and lots of care needed to help the little cygnet grow big and strong enough to return home. But that special day has finally arrived!

Last week, we were delighted to return mum and her cygnet to the Barnes flock. The release went wonderfully, with both swans heading straight into the water and settling in, mixing happily with the rest of the flock.

Being able to return swans to their natural homes is one of the very best parts of the job at The Swan Sanctuary. After all the hard work, dedication and care that goes into every recovery, moments like these make it all worthwhile.
