As we're currently enjoying , we are here to remind you about our science subject leaders' handbook, which is available to download for free from our website.

Focusing on science as one element in a holistic, joined-up primary curriculum, this resource offers richly detailed insights and information to help science subject leaders navigate the hugely rewarding area of curriculum design.

It introduces the three 'golden threads' that run through a Harmony-inspired curriculum and outlines the benefits of this approach to science curriculum design in schools.

These golden threads are:
🌱 Sustainability and Nature at the heart of education
🌱 Interconnected curriculum coherence
🌱 Curriculum design that is underpinned by the principles of Harmony

When woven together, these threads create a unique approach to curriculum design and play a unique role in shaping a child’s future and understanding of sustainability.

If you would like to discuss how to implement this framework in your science curriculum, please contact [email protected].

💭 What would it have been like to live in WWII?

This question frames our Year 6 learning enquiry linked to of the principle of Adaptation. It explores a moment in history when people had to adapt rapidly to extraordinary challenges, and brings together learning across the curriculum.

Through their learning in history and DT, children find out how the ‘Dig for Victory’ campaign encouraged self-sufficiency in a time of food scarcity. In science, they use their understanding of fair testing to investigate the best material to block light in a blackout.

They write evacuee diaries in English and explore prejudice, propaganda, disinformation and the importance of critical thinking in PSHE.

The science lessons that support this learning enquiry will be launching soon.

If you are a Year 6 teacher looking ahead to future planning, you can register to download this resource, which is part of our free Year 6 enquiry overview pack, on our website: https://www.theharmonyproject.org.uk/teaching-resources/year-6-enquiry-overviews

Healthy rivers support an abundance of life. The journey a river takes from its source helps tell an important chapter in the story of the water cycle.

These two concepts are at the heart of our learning enquiry ‘What journey does a river take?’, which provides opportunities for Year 5 children to learn about a river local to them. They find out about its features in geography and consider why human settlements have developed along its course. They will also learn about the risks posed by flooding and water pollution and what is being done to address them.

In science, they explore changes of state linked to the water cycle and learn about the materials carried in river water and how river water can be cleaned. In English, children will bring their local river to life through descriptive writing. This enquiry can also be used as inspiration in art, to create portraits of creatures that live in and around our rivers.

How did the Anglo Saxons farm and how was it different from today? 🐖

This enquiry question invites Year 4 children to journey back in time to the world of the Anglo-Saxons. Through their learning, they explore how Anglo-Saxon food, and the way it was produced, differed from our diet and methods of food production today.

In history, they discover what Anglo-Saxon settlements and mixed farms looked like, and what artefacts tell us about the Anglo-Saxon way of life. In science, they investigate the digestive system, and compare how the foods the Anglo-Saxons ate and the foods we eat today affect our teeth and wider health. And in DT, they apply their learning about the Anglo-Saxon diet to create their own recipes using oats.

This enquiry helps children to develop a deeper understanding of healthy eating and to reflect on how learning from the past can help inform the choices we make for a healthier future.

The science lesson plans to support this learning enquiry are now available. Keep an eye on our feed in the coming weeks for further info about these and other resources.

Signs of spring are here which means autumn is, for now, a memory - one of crisp leaves and rich colours, marking a turning of seasons and reminding us of the cycles of the year.

Our Year 3 enquiry overview taps into the cycles of trees, specifically those native to the UK. It explores how we can identify trees through their leaf patterns and shapes, learn about how the leaves have adapted to nurture and nourish the tree to which they belong and see how Nature’s purposeful designs inspire human innovation.

This enquiry overview is available to download now from our website, together with accompanying science lesson plans. Simply sign up for an account here to download and build your bank of Nature-connected learning resources: www.theharmonyproject.org.uk 🍁 🍃

Eating a balanced diet, washing our hands and taking time to do the things that make us feel well - they're just a few of the factors that help keep us healthy.

This is the focus for our Year 2 learning enquiry 'What do I need to be healthy?', linked to the principle of Health and aptly named as this week is

Over a half term, children explore this question - and their responses to it - in subjects across the curriculum.

In science, they learn about the things that humans and all animals need to stay alive and to thrive. They use verbs to write movement poetry in English, cook using seasonal fruits and vegetables in DT and find out about the importance of good sleep in PSHE.

Details of the free-to-access science planning that supports this learning enquiry are coming soon so keep an eye on our feed.

What kind of superhero do I want to be? 💭

It's the question that drives the learning in our Year 1 enquiry of the same name, linked to the principle of Diversity.

It provides a range of rich learning opportunities across the curriculum for children to explore just how amazing their bodies are, to reflect on all the things that makes each of them a superhero and to become real-life superheroes in their school community.

In maths, they use their hands to count in fives and ten, while in science they learn all about the senses that help us to interact with the world around us - and each other. They then apply this understanding in geography to create sound maps of a familiar setting and engage with the colours and scents of autumn. And much more!

The science planning to support this learning in enquiry is also now available for teachers - watch this space for more details!

As we head into the festive break, we'd like to thank everyone who has supported our work and shares our vision of an education system with Nature and sustainability at its heart.

To the schools we work with, to the teachers and leaders and, most importantly, to all the children who have enjoyed learning through the lens of Harmony this year: thank you and have a wonderful festive break. We look forward to working with you again in 2026!

Our sincere thanks also go to our funders for their fantastic support of our charity’s work.
