🌺 A Playground That Always Blooms 🌸

Bright plastic flowers dance on the fence,
colour that lifts the cloudy grey;
little hands shaped every petal,
turning waste into a bright display.
Plastic is clever, tough and light
it shields from wind and rain and cold.
But once it’s made, it lingers on,
in land and sea for ages untold.

As all our blossoms shine and glow,
we learn to choose with care each day:
reduce, reuse, recycle well,
and let mindful habits lead the way.

The plastic sheeting used to make the flowers was sourced from WRAP, a great local initiative that promotes creativity and elongates the life of many things that would otherwise end up in landfill. It’s worth checking out https://wrapwatfordscrap.wixsite.com/wrap

As the leaves begin to turn, nature gives us a whole new palette of colours to explore. This weekend, when you’re out walking with your child, how about collecting a few fallen leaves of different shapes, sizes and shades. Take them home and have a go at some of these simple activities;

Leaf Rubbings — Place a leaf under paper (bumpy vein side up) and gently colour over it to reveal its pattern, crayons work best!

Nature Shapes — Use leaves to make pictures: animals, landscapes, or even your own “eco superhero”.

Leaf Letters — Arrange leaves to spell out a word (like care, hope, planet, kindness).

Whilst you’re collecting and creating it’s a good opportunity to talk about what you each love in nature; a favourite place, an animal, or just something outdoors that makes you feel calm or happy.

Noticing what we care about is often the first step in helping our planet thrive.

Autumn Hanging Basket Workshop 🍂🍁🌸

Sunday 18th October 11am - 1pm in the Ricky Community Garden

Come along and learn from Eco Ted how to make a hanging basket filled with pollinator friendly plants for Autumn 🐝

There will be plenty of brilliant tips as Ted demonstrates and talks you through creating your own.

We keep the group size small so you can watch, learn and get help. All in the beautiful tranquility of the orchard and community garden.

Not been before? Just head towards the library in the town centre and walk up Northway, we are opposite the council offices. You’ll see the rose garden, just walk through there and you’ll see the gate at the top to the orchard & community garden.

In a new series…we’re sharing the amazing things school children from St. John’s school are doing to care for the planet and explore how to live and have fun with creativity.

🍎This Autumn Eco Club resources are literally falling from trees! Who needs Hobbycraft when sticks and apples are literally falling at our feet?! Bruised and battered apples have been threaded onto garden wire and secured with a stick for birds to feast on.

🪲 The bugs have also been provided with a beautifully decorated tiled roof on their hotel using a selection of leftover kitchen and bathroom tiles found in the depths of my overpacked garage!

🍁As the season changes, it is worth reminding ourselves of the presence of nature all around us and how, like us, it goes through phases of growth and then a shedding of leaves. In Autumn trees don’t try to hold on to everything they have grown; they let go of what they no longer need, making space for new growth.

Nothing is wasted — fallen leaves nourish the soil and old plants provide homes for insects and animals.

Perhaps we could take a leaf out of nature’s book.

We live in a world that constantly tells us we need more — more toys, more clothes, the latest gadget, something new to replace something perfectly good. But perhaps it’s time to rediscover the old-fashioned wisdom of “waste not, want not”.

💡Before buying something new, could we mend it, reuse it, swap it, share it or simply make do? Our Eco Club is a small reminder that we don’t always need to buy something to create something. Sometimes the best resources are already around us — a stick, a fallen apple, an old tile or a handful of leaves.

Less buying, less wasting, more reusing — and, just like nature, making room for new growth. 🌱

A Bug’s Life! 🐞🐛🦟🪲🪳🐜

Beetles, bees, woodlice, spiders, centipedes and snails. You might remember our bug hotel made by the Eco Club at St. John’s school…

Well….we’ve been making a ‘bug room’ for the relocated ‘bug hotel’ ensuring a safe, dry, organic matter filled, 5 stick, loguxrious place to chill over winter, lay eggs and munch on decaying mulch!

Why do we do this? Because bugs are our planet’s quiet caretakers — pollinating our food, enriching our soil, and keeping the whole web of life stitched together so our children can grow up in a world that thrives.

💚 Want to help too? Making a place for bugs is very simple, either leave an area of your garden or outside space ‘untidied’ - fallen leaves and dead heads provide perfect hidey holes for bugs that enter ‘diapause’ over winter. Alternatively make a bug hotel using sticks, logs, pine cones, dried leaves, you can just pile them up, or if you have some old pallets you can stack them up like we have at the school.

Spending time outside doing something for nature will also have a wonderfully calming effect on your child’s or your own wellbeing — giving them space to breathe, move, notice the world around them and feel proud of the small but mighty difference they can make. 💚🐞🦋

Join us this Friday, 11th September, for a special nature immersion in the Ricky Community garden 🦋🌿🍁

Gillian at Gillian Lipton runs forest bathing in local woodland and in this special session, will facilitate a slice of that experience through a gentle guided immersion for our senses in the garden.

Come and notice how the smallest of patches of nature can provide calm feelings and wellbeing, opening our eyes and ears to the tiniest of nature sounds. Leave feeling more connected to the earth and a calmer self within.

This is a lovely opportunity to experience the outdoors in a guided session where Gillian will help you reconnect with your senses and the wellbeing power of nature.

In this one hour session, you’ll learn about the benefits of nature on your nervous system and mind, through mindfulness and immersion amongst the gardens.

We had a fabulous time at Chorleywood Village Day on Saturday 11th July 💚🌸🌳🌍

It was so great to be a part of this wonderful event, we got to meet lots of residents & visitors to Chorleywood, chatting all things sustainability including energy, the environment, animal welfare and eco friendly living.

Plus we had some NEW things 😍
Our brand new Sustainable Three Rivers CIC (S3R) table cloth which we love so much, our pledge tree (look out for this at our events and stalls), quizzes, resources and our new poster about getting started with sustainable lifestyle changes. Sue Quelch brought her beautiful coasters to inspire ‘save the Antarctic chicks’ - aren’t they lovely 💚

Our thanks also to Chorleywood Parish Council Sue Quelch for their support, contributions and enthusiasm for sustainability and our beautiful planet.
