💙 Do you see me?

This year's Learning Disability Week theme encourages us to think about how people with learning disabilities are seen and supported.

Too often, people are defined by their disability rather than recognised for who they are. Their interests, talents, ambitions, opinions and contributions can be overlooked.

At Active Prospects, we see people as individuals. People with goals to achieve, skills to share and voices that deserve to be heard.

We are proud to work alongside people to ensure they have choice and control over their lives, and opportunities to influence the communities and world around them.

Whether that is shaping training for health and social care professionals, sharing lived experience, pursuing personal goals or supporting others, the people we support make a true difference to our organisation every day.

This Learning Disability Week, we're celebrating the talents, achievements and voices of the incredible people we support, and continuing to recognising the value they bring to our communities.

💙 “The gym is not only a place where you work out your muscles. It is also a place, where you take your anxiety out.” – Musa

As we head into Men's Health Week, we're sharing a glimpse into the relationship between Musa and his support worker, Peter.

When Musa was going through a difficult period, the answer wasn't complicated. It started with taking the time to talk, listen and understand what mattered to him.

That journey led Musa and Peter discovering a shared passion for the gym. Today, it has become an important part of how he looks after his mental wellbeing.

“Now Musa is more confident. He loves to go out, especially when he goes to the gym. He is motivating other people in the gym, saying, ‘Don't give up!’” – Peter, Support Worker

The right support is about creating opportunities and helping people find what works for them.

Supporting Musa to find his SPARK – the things that motivate and inspire him – has made a real difference to his wellbeing and independence.

🌈 As Pride Month begins, we're highlighting some of the ways people we support are getting involved in their local communities.

One of Reg's favourite hobbies is playing in a local steel drum group, Sussex Steel. After months of practice and dedication, the group has been invited to perform as part of the Brighton Pride Parade, joining one of the UK's biggest celebrations of pride and inclusion.

"We are practising so many songs now and even an Adele song – do you know her songs? It is one of our hardest songs to learn yet!" -Reg

Being part of the group has helped Reg build confidence, develop new skills and connect with people who share his passion for music.

For Reg, this opportunity is about more than performing. It's about being part of a community, expressing who he is and taking part in an event that brings people together through acceptance, inclusion and celebration.

We can't wait to see Sussex Steel perform and share more highlights from Pride Month throughout June. 🌈💙

Sometimes, the people we call neighbours become something even more meaningful — friends 💙

Today, we want to spotlight a friendship that has flourished within one of our supported living homes.

At Active Prospects, we believe independence is about more than where someone lives. It is also about feeling connected, included and part of a community around you.

Sometimes, the most meaningful moments are the simplest ones. Spending time together in shared spaces. Cups of tea. Shared meals. Conversation. Everyday moments that help people feel safe to be themselves and build genuine friendships naturally over time.

We are incredibly proud of the dedication shown by our teams in creating homes where people feel a true sense of belonging and are supported to lead full and aspiring lives 💙

⛳ What does wellbeing support look like when it’s shaped around people, not programmes?

Recently, members of our wellbeing team spent an afternoon at the driving range together.
Using a simple emotional regulation technique, our wellbeing team encouraged people to imagine each golf ball as a worry or stressful thought — and then physically let it go with each shot 💭

At Active Prospects, our wellbeing coaching is co-produced and built around personalised support plans for everyone. Rather than expecting members to fit into traditional wellbeing models, our team works alongside individuals to shape support around their strengths, preferences and lived experiences 🤝

Positive wellbeing doesn’t always start in a traditional setting. Often, it starts with connection, shared experiences and a sense of belonging ✨

Being outdoors, learning new skills and building confidence together — what could be better? 🌿

Last month, a group of people we support and colleagues took part in a two-day programme with Surrey Outdoor Learning and Development, focused on teamwork, communication, and supporting one another to try something new.

“I felt you were willing to see me succeed so I kept trying till I did it. Even if it was my way not the way someone else did it.” Group participant

At Active Prospects, we believe everyone should have the opportunity to connect with others, and achieve things in their own way, at their own pace. Activities like this help to build trust, develop new skills, and work together to overcome challenges — all while having fun outdoors.
