Ethel Rosenberg: A cold war tragedy

In June 1953, Julius and Ethel Rosenberg, a couple with two young sons, were led separately from their prison cells on Death Row and electrocuted moments apart. Both had been convicted of conspiracy to commit espionage for the Soviet Union, despite the fact that the US government was aware that the evidence against Ethel was shaky at best and based on the perjury of her own brother. Anne’s book is the first in forty years to focus on one half of that couple and she will be revealing more of this amazing story.
The talk will be live streamed and members will be sent the link to access it before the event.

• Pickleball. Try a low-impact blend of tennis, table tennis and badminton, played with a perforated plastic ball.
• Film Club. We have a group leader! Watch a film chosen by a member — ideally one
they’ve seen and enjoyed — then share what you thought of it and why.
• Current Affairs 5. A group leader is ready to start another group exploring current affairs. We’re looking for more
members.

Climate briefing in Woodhatch

Reigate and Redhill Community Network is inviting rru3a members to a screening of the People’s Emergency Briefing (PEB) at the Woodhatch community centre .
The PEB is an eye-opening film bringing together leading UK scientists and experts with the latest evidence on the climate crisis, what can be done about it, and why it matters for things like extreme weather, food security, health and the cost of living
The film is based on the National Emergency Briefing given to MPs in Westminster, hosted by Chris Packham and with a range of voices from across the UK.
After the film there will be a short open discussion about what it means for our community and what we can do locally.
There is no charge and the details of timings and ticket booking are:

Monthly meeting September 2026 - The Ghosts of Scotland Yard

Over the years, the headquarters of the Metropolitan Police in London has been located at several sites including its current location on the Embankment. As a former volunteer in the famous Crime Museum, Lindsay Siviter has been collecting stories and tales about alleged ghostly sightings and strange phenomena within this famous institution’s various locations and collated all these stories together for her presentation.

Monthly meeting August 7th: Racing through the Southern Ocean

14.00 on Friday 7th August at Reigate Park Church

Ian Worley will be talking about his experiences whilst sailing as a watch leader, later promoted to First Mate, on the maxi yacht Great Britain II in the 1977/78 Whitbread Round the World Race. During that race they encountered storms aplenty, raging seas, icebergs and a lightning strike, all whilst he was filming for the BBC sports programme Grandstand. Later, he made a film of his experiences which he sold to United Artists to accompany the James Bond film Moonraker.
Hold on to your seats - we might be in for a bumpy ride!
