Alexander Tolush, a talented and notable Russian Grandmaster, was the subject of our 2026 ‘How good is your chess’ competition this week. But fame is not enough!
The skill with which he marshalled his pieces and the patience he exercised in building pressure on his opponent would have come to nought had Keith Jones been unable to construct a mighty chair tower to support our trusty demonstration board. Clever how a pencil and pen improvised for a hook. Clearly the Welsh are wizards though it should be noted there hasn’t been a Welsh world chess champion yet. Not a Lancashire one either. Come on juniors, we need to put that right!
Anyway, after the great construction by Heath Robinson Jones the competition got going. Members played through one of Tolush’s Russian championship matches and scored points (or didn’t) for finding his combinations and brilliances. On this occasion Ben Brown outscored everyone to win the night’s star prize, a box of liquorice all sorts (it being too hot for chocolate) whilst Isaac Wong produced a stellar performance to claim the junior prize.
Well done everybody. Next couple of weeks we shall gather for the 10 minute challenge.
Always something going on at Rossendale Chess Club. If you haven’t been before, come and join us. If you haven’t been for a while, come back. We’ll be thrilled to see you. Chess nights aren’t at all evil!

The increase in numbers joining the club sees us move, this week, to a bigger room at the ABD Centre. It also marks a change in the night from Tuesday to Thursday.

As the club continues to grow, we give a special mention to our board sponsors - Mike Bridges (for all your travel arrangements), Bridge Removals & Storage (for all your storage and removals), The Circle Bacup (a great place for food and entertainment), Riley's Butchers (award winning butchers in Crawshawbooth), Waterfoot Medical Practice and our latest sponsor, Marl Pits Garden Centre (for all your gardening needs). Their support enables us to evolve as a club and to continue encouraging and supporting juniors. Please support them where you can.

The Patrick English Shield.
It is several years since the Patrick English Shield was awarded. Now it sports a new name: Alex Vijatov, outright winner of the club’s Lightning Championship competed for last Tuesday.
Brian Bancroft, always a tough contestant in this form of chess (perhaps it’s his aggressive style) had to settle for second place, whilst it was very pleasing to see talented junior Charlie Webb grab joint third.
Well done everyone!
In May we shall be holding another of the very popular ‘How good is your chess’ competitions. No silverware but prizes to be won.
The first 3 meetings in June will feature ‘The 10 Minute Challenge’. Keep your eye on the notice board. All will be revealed!
Most important. There will be no Tuesday meeting on the 19th May. From the 21st of May Rossendale Chess Club will be meeting on Thursdays at the ABD Centre in the large downstairs room. From the 21st Chess Club will be on Thursdays, 6.30 for juniors, 7.30 regular chess club.
You have been warned.
Knights are changing!
