Fantastic Mr Thomas!!

Wales' last two blast furnaces are now gone from Port Talbot - but they have a new lease of life for chemistry lessons at a local school where many of the students have family who worked at the steelworks ❤️

Eurig Thomas uses the silhouettes of the retired Port Talbot steelworks structures to teach pupils about carbon emissions.

He said: “When I moved to this school nearly eight years ago we were shown a tour of the new building. I looked out of the window of the chemistry labs and saw the silhouette of the blast furnaces there in the background and it just came to me straightaway.

"I draw the silhouette of what is the schematic diagram they would have seen in textbooks and then relate that to the reality behind me and to the chemistry inside.

“You get links to: 'My uncle worked in the furnaces' or: 'My dad worked here'. We talk about the job market, the effect of closing it, and the seriousness of unemployment. It becomes a real issue for them."

He added: “Giving day‑to‑day real‑life examples makes it more relatable. That’s when they understand why big decisions have been made and what the future holds.”

His teaching has now earned him plaudits in a new Royal Society of Chemistry report. Eurig said he hopes the way he teaches will encourage more pupils to study chemistry and sciences amid a fall in numbers nationally.

It's nice to see an important part of Port Talbot's history is being carried forward - even if the furnaces themselves are gone. Well done, Sir 👏❤️

We are pleased to announce our charity of the year for 2026 is YCB Community 💛 Based within Ysgol Cwm Brombil in Margam, they are a small local charity existing to stand alongside families during difficult times, offering practical help, kindness, and hope when it’s needed most.

“At the heart of our work is a simple belief: no child or family in our community should ever feel unsupported or left behind.
Through our weekly food banks and clothing support for both children and parents, we help ease daily pressures and restore dignity. At Christmas, we ensure joy reaches every doorstep by providing gifts and clothing to around 300 children each year, so every child can experience the warmth and excitement of the festive season.

We also work closely with local partners and community events, including the In It Together Festival, to break down barriers and ensure all families can take part, feel included, and create lasting memories together.
By bringing people together and supporting one another, we are helping to build a stronger, kinder community where every family knows they are seen, valued, and cared for.”

BDP will be fundraising throughout the year and supporting the charity’s appeals. We hope you can join us in helping raise funds and awareness.

Keep your eyes peeled for an upcoming event announcement!
