What if a charity donation could help a child see themselves as a survivor, not a victim?

That’s at the heart of the Welsh Dragon Burns Club – the only club of its kind in Wales, supporting children and young people recovering from burn injuries and body image concerns for more than 22 years.

Charitable donations helped fund a recent trip to Butlins where young burns survivors spent time together away from the hospital environment.

As club chairman Louise Scannell said:
“Being able to see how others live with their scars makes all the difference too.”

💙 The club relies entirely on donations, grants and sponsorship.

Beth petai rhodd elusennol yn gallu helpu plentyn i weld ei hun fel goroeswr, nid dioddefwr?

Dyna sydd wrth wraidd Clwb Llosgiadau Welsh Dragon – yr unig glwb o’i fath yng Nghymru, sy’n cefnogi plant a phobl ifanc sy’n gwella ar ôl anafiadau llosgi a phryderon ynghylch delwedd y corff ers dros 22 mlynedd.

Helpodd rhoddion elusennol i a***nnu taith ddiweddar i Butlins, lle cafodd pobl ifanc a oedd wedi dioddef llosgiadau gyfle i dreulio amser gyda’i gilydd y tu allan i amgylchedd yr ysbyty.

Fel y dywedodd cadeirydd y clwb, Louise Scannell:

“Mae gallu gweld sut mae eraill yn byw gyda’u creithiau yn gwneud byd o wahaniaeth hefyd.”

💙 Mae’r clwb yn dibynnu’n llwyr ar roddion, grantiau a nawdd.

💙 Helping patients feel more like themselves

Losing your hair can be one of the most distressing side effects of chemotherapy. Thanks to our charitable funding, patients at the South West Wales Cancer Centre can access support to help them feel more confident during treatment.

💇‍♀️ £100 wig vouchers help patients choose a wig that feels right for them.

❄️ Funding has also provided an additional cold cap machine, allowing more patients to access scalp-cooling therapy, which can help reduce hair loss during chemotherapy.

As Chemotherapy Sister Emma Morgan explains:

“The offer of wigs and scalp cooling offers an element of control so that our patients can still look like themselves, which can help hugely with coping with this life changing diagnosis.”

💙 Together, these forms of support can help patients maintain their dignity, confidence and sense of identity during treatment.

Swansea Bay’s cancer patients are set for a warmer, less clinical care experience, after the local community smashed a £200,000 fundraising target 🎗️

🎯 The final push came from Touched by Cancer, a women's touch rugby tournament held on Saturday, 8th August, which brought in £54,000 in one day — enough to tip the whole appeal, Swansea Bay Health Charity's Going the Extra Mile for Cancer Appeal, past its goal. Across two tournaments, the event has now contributed £78,000, more than a third of everything raised.

🏥 The money will fund a full transformation of the old chemotherapy unit at the South West Wales Cancer Centre, Singleton Hospital, turning it into a modern outpatient department where consultants, specialist nurses, pharmacists and therapy teams can all work under one roof — plus the return of a volunteer-run tea bar for patients and families to use.

🌍 Thousands of people rely on the centre each year, travelling in from as far as Powys, Pembrokeshire and Ceredigion as well as Swansea and Neath Port Talbot. The appeal itself has run for two years, fuelled by everything from marathons and mountain climbs to bake sales and sponsored challenges from local businesses, schools and NHS staff.

💬 Russell Banner, Clinical Director at the South West Wales Cancer Centre, said: "These improvements will create a more welcoming and supportive space for patients and their families, bringing services closer together and helping us provide more coordinated, patient-centred care."

💬 Cathy Stevens of Swansea Bay Health Charity said the total shows "what can be achieved when the Swansea Bay community comes together," adding that hitting the target "allows us to begin the refurbishment, making a lasting impact to cancer patients and their families for years to come."

💬 Rachel Cole, who ran the Swansea Half Marathon in memory of her mum Sandra, a patient at the centre, said better surroundings "can make all the difference to those individuals going through such a hard time in their lives as it's such an emotionally draining experience."

After two years of incredible fundraisers and passionate supporters coming together for a worthy cause, the Swansea Bay community has raised the £200,000 target for the Going the Extra Mile for Cancer Appeal!

A special thanks goes to the teams who have fundraised in the Touched by Cancer Tournament last weekend, where more than £54,000 was raised!🏉 Da iawn to our top fundraisers, Tonna Turbette's Touch Rugby who raised £8,382!

Thank you to each and every one of our fundraisers, ambassadors, volunteers, supporters and sponsors for supporting us over the two years. We wouldn't be where we are today without your support 💙

Next, we'll be getting stuck into the refurbishment plans to make transform cancer care at Singleton Hospital. Stay tuned for updates!
