Introducing ‘Life Forms’ by Katie Lennon ✨

A collection of small works celebrating the microscopic miracle of existence 💫

“I’ve always been fascinated by old scientific diagrams of cells. How the complex, microscopic makeup of all life forms are reduced to simple, two-dimensional illustrated shapes, embellished with dots and lines, forming pleasing repeat patterns and sequences.

“This fascination became particularly relevant following a successful stem cell transplant in 2022 to treat stage 4 blood cancer.”

Through a series of small abstract paintings Katie has visualised how her own body has received and accepted the cells that were donated, using colour and pattern to imagine the different qualities and attributes of the new donor DNA mingling with her own.

“This exhibition is a celebration of the cell, in all its visual and scientific wonder.” — Katie Lennon.

Behind every exhibition, welcome desk conversation, and gallery experience is an incredible team of volunteers who make it all possible.✨

Happy 💛

From a 21-year-old art student 🎨 to an 81-year-old former Senior Civil Servant, our volunteers bring a wealth of experience, knowledge, and enthusiasm to the gallery.

Did you know that around 100 volunteers support us in a variety of ways:
That's approximately 40 active volunteers generously giving around 4 hours of their time each week plus 60 dedicated gallery invigilators🖼️.

Our volunteers help keep our galleries running, enjoy behind-the-scenes tours with our curators and artists 👀, and are always among the first to see our new exhibitions ✨.

Our volunteers have built a community of their own, with a book club 📚, film club 🎬, and regular outings – most recently visiting the Beryl Cook exhibition in Plymouth.

This Volunteer Week, we're celebrating every one of them and the time, care, and passion they bring. THANK YOU!
