Some nice pictures taken today in the Docklands showing what Bellway’s Harbour Village could look like with an actual restored harbour, we really do need to get the water back in for some boating fun at Northfleet.

Under threat of loss is probably one of the oldest surviving cranes and tracks on the Thames, currently there is no clear strategic plan for Northfleet Harbours heritage from the local planning authority Ebbsfleet Development Corporation, this planning vacuum creates risk for rare features like this ancient crane linked with the nearby scheduled ancient monument Aspdins Kiln.

Could this be a turning in the tide with new maritime infrastructure being installed in our stretch of the Thames.

A little more info on the new Gravesend West Street pier

"The new pontoon at West Street Pier will be reserved specifically for tugs and other working vessels and will not be open to the public, meaning it will not provide a visitors berth for historic vessels. It will be available to workboats and tug operators for 24-hour use to accommodate modern port operations. We will be working with operators to minimise noise during unsocial hours to respect the local community.

While we haven’t finalised agreements with any tenants yet, the reserved space on the inside, lower end of the pontoon is intended for our (PLA) vessels"

The volunteers have done some great work clearing the tracks for the crane, it would be good to get these cleared all the way along in 2026. Can anyone guess what the middle track was for?

Does anyone have a wheelbarrow they could donate to the Harbour Trust for the volunteers to use clearing the slipway and docks, any condition as long the wheels not flat, please just drop off at the harbour at the bottom of College Road. We could make use of a couple but one will definitely get us moving.

Some great work by the team clearing the historic public slipway and docks at Northfleet Harbour, as the article pictured attests who would have thought we had riots at this location in 1852 and the two rival cement factories were fighting over its use. Amazing to see some of the original fender posts from over 160 years ago still in existence, we have a mooring ring off of one of them in the harbour’s little museum cabin.

The Waverley steaming past the harbour today, hopefully one day the jetty alongside Harbour Village will be able to welcome such vessels along with the harbour.
