Newtownards RBL 4 v 2 Comber Rec III
The 1s played their last game of the season tonight, as we welcomed a strong Comber Rec III outfit to Hamilton Park. A point or better secured a 4th place for the 1s, but defeat would see Comber edge it by a point.
The game had a pretty even start to it as the sides sized each other up, but the breakthrough would come just after the half hour mark as Magee made it 1-0. That goal changed the balance of play as the 1s started to dominate, and that dominance was rewarded 6 mins before the interval, when Stewart linked up with Sargent who hit a cracker to make it 2-0.
Comber then made a bright start to the second half as they looked to get back into this one, but another cracker would see McLean extend the lead to 3-0 on the hour mark. The game was all but over as we entered the final 20 mins when Sargent found substitute Wigston, who calmly sent it over the keepers head to make it 4-0. The 1s went down to 10 men as Mullan had to come off with all subs used, and Comber made the most of that over the final 10 mins as efforts from Janahi and a pen from Yildiz saw the deficit reduced to 4-2, but the 3 points went to the 1s, to finish the season with 7 wins, 2 draws and only 1 defeat in their last 10 games, and something they’ll look to build upon over the preseason build up for next season.
Thanks to Comber Rec for a good battle tonight and our thoughts are with the Rec family on the loss of their former chairman, for which a min silence was help at the start of the game.
