Loughries Men’s Shed - Ukulele Event.

Loughries Men’s Shed Ukulele Ensemble were invited to perform in the Queens Hall, Newtownards on Saturday 17th October 2026, at Ark Housing / Housing Executive / Ards and North Down Council grandfest 2026, - as part of Northern Ireland’s Good Relations week.

“GRANDfest was a free multicultural celebration featuring live music, dance, performances , arts & craft activities, and delicious food. The event brought together a diverse range of talented musicians & performers, showcasing both local artists and those from diverse cultures. Line up so far, traditional Scottish dancers, local vocalist, a local duo, Loughrie’s Men’s Shed Ukulele Ensemble, Indian Dancers, African Tribal Drumming Workshop, Chinese Dragons, Party Animals, Magician and so much more”.

We were first on and played our 30 minute to a packed Queens Hall, which was full of life and excitement.

Loughries Men's Shed - Update!

As well as having a very successful ukulele group we also have a thriving Men's Shed and allotment. As part of our continued community outreach we recently engaged in a joint project with The Progressive Building Society (Newtownards), Phoenix Healthcare (Newtownards) and ourselves.

We made 4 large portable raised beds (on wheels) and delivered them to the Phoenix facility where their residents with the help from the Progressive staff planted some over-winter flowers to help brighten their garden area.

We hope to revisit the centre again in early 2027 and provide more planters, flowers etc...... here are a few images for your perusal.

Loughries Men’s Shed - New Tune - Sailor!

Another new tune for our ukulele ensemble - this song was inspired from a visit we had to the Ballybeen Ladies (aul dolls) group a few months back - its Sailor by Petula Clark.

Its almost complete a few tweaks here and there and its ready for our performance repertoire.

Loughries Men’s Shed - Ukulele Ensemble New Tune.

As the men prepare for the performances on the run-up to Halloween then Christmas, we have been trying a few new songs/tunes to add to our ever expanding repertoire. The tunes need a bit of fine tuning, however the more we play and sing the better the song/tune plays and sounds!

This tune is one by the late great Johnny Cash - 'You’re The Nearest Thing To Heaven’ - as a mens group we can relate to this as occasional we get on the wrong side of our spouses, perhaps with one or two drinks too many and we try to soften her up and these lyrics relate to that !

Loughries Men’s Shed - Ukulele Class

With the summer months past us and autumn on the horizon, the men have settled back into our usual Monday evening class in Londonderry Primary School. Also, we commenced a series of beginner classes prior to the main class and they have proved very successful, with 8 new men in recent weeks.

We have been working on a number of new tunes, some taking longer to progress than others, however here is one we think is almost ready to add to our ‘performance list’ - a song by Hank William ‘Your Cheating Heart’

Loughries Men's Shed - Ukulele Performances

This week the men returned to Londonderry Primary School for their weekly practice - during practice we prepared for two events that we had been looking forward to attending.

1. Wednesday 19th August Peninsula Cancer Support Group (PCSG) - Kircubbin Co. Down (Community Centre) 7.15pm. It was great night, was enjoyed by everyone and wonderful home made traybake to end the evening.

2. Saturday 22nd August Marie Curie Coffee Morning - 19 Boretree-Island Park - the home of Rae & Mervyn 10am to 12md. Again a very special and unique event where friends and neighbours called in to support this very worthy charity - the ukulele group played very well and our music was enjoyed by everyone.

Loughries Men’s Shed - August Outing 1.

We travelled to Portaferry on Saturday 1st August to perform at the Sails & Sounds Festival, with an early start at 10.30am Our men are busy with other activities on a Saturday afternoon, so the time was convenient.

We played for around 1hr 20 minutes split between two sessions between 10.30 am and 12.30pm - quite a few members of the public stopped and listened as we performed our extended playlist.

Loughries Men’s Shed - Visitors.

Loughries Men’s Shed welcome staff and service users from Bayview Day Centre (ELDS) to our shed and allotment on Friday 10th July as part of our continued community outreach.

Bayview had visited a few month back to officially open our new greenhouse and plant their sunflower seeds, and they revisit our shed and allotment to have a picnic and to harvest some of our crops. the weather was perfect for the visit, so the folk set about harvesting new potatoes, yes, beetroot, onions, salad leaves and their favourite lovely ripe strawberries - which they got to taste.

They had a fantastic morning, getting an opportunity to get out and about , enjoying the wonderful weather and harvest some natural produce.So thanks to the Emma and her team for visiting us and we look forward to them returning later in the summer.

Loughries Men’s Shed - Ukulele Update.

The ukulele ensemble held their last practice evening on Monday 29th June in our usual venue Londonderry Primary School, however with the school closing over the summer we’ve decided to take a short break for the holiday period with our practice evening commencing again in Ards Bowling Club on Monday 27th July at 6.30pm - beginners class at 5.45pm.

We have had two events to perform at in the meantime both on a very hot 8th July - Ark-housing were unveiling a new mural at one of their housing developments in Newtownards and Tullycarnett Community Centre for a local ladies group.

So a welcome break now, when the men can recharge their batteries, enjoy some quality family time and we look forward to our next gig which is in Portaferry on Saturday 1st August.
