πŸ‡¬πŸ‡§ A FANTASTIC DAY OF SHARED HISTORY & REMEMBRANCE πŸ‡¬πŸ‡§
Today, First Newtownards Somme & Historical Society joined forces with Millisle District Somme Society for a fantastic day out to County Cavan, visiting a museum filled with fascinating artefacts, displays and information relating to the heroic 36th (Ulster) Division, the Irish Volunteers, and the wider history of those who served and sacrificed during the Great War.

πŸ‘ A MASSIVE THANK YOU TO MILLISLE DISTRICT SOMME SOCIETY for coming along and making it such an enjoyable and memorable day. It was brilliant to spend the day together, sharing stories, learning more about our history and keeping the memory of those who came before us alive.

Days like today are about more than simply visiting a museum β€” they are about remembering, learning and passing our shared history on to future generations.

A fantastic day was had by everyone, and we look forward to many more days like this together.

They gave their today for our tomorrow,
Through fields of courage, grief and sorrow.
Young hearts marched on where duty led,
Knowing that many would soon lie dead.

The whistles blew, the guns roared loud,
Smoke concealed a fearful shroud.
Yet still they climbed from trench and wire,
Into the storm of shell and fire.

They asked for neither fame nor praise,
Only to serve through those dark days.
Shoulder to shoulder, hand in hand,
They fought for home, for King, for land.

Many would never see home again,
Their final resting place the Somme's broad plain.
Their dreams were lost, their futures gone,
Yet through their sacrifice, our freedoms dawned.

One hundred and ten years have passed,
Yet their courage forever will stand fast.
For every poppy that gently sways,
Speaks of their lives and all they gave.

So let us remember, with grateful hearts,
The men who played history's hardest part.
Their voices may fade, their footsteps cease,
But because of them, we live in peace.

Lest We Forget.πŸŒΊπŸ‡¬πŸ‡§πŸŒΊ
