Mourne Mountain Rescue Team

The Mourne Mountain Rescue Team was established in 1962 and was the first mountain rescue team in Ireland.

The Team is made up entirely of volunteers who turn out in all weather, day or night, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

Callout 31.08.26;

At 1149hrs today, the team received a request to assist a Mountain Biker who had taken a fall on the Castlewellan MTB Trails. The casualty, who was in a party of 2, suffered a debilitating lower leg injury necessitating assistance. The Team responded, located and treated the casualty before evacuating them via team vehicle. When at road access, the casualty was handed over to Ambulance for onward transfer to hospital.
We wish the casualty well.

7 members responding and standing down at 1418hrs.

Ambulance HART and Air Ambulance were tasked as a precaution but stood down en route.

August 28, 1948 – A milestone in mountain rescue history… 🏔️

On this weekend in 1948, mountain rescue pioneers from across different countries gathered at the Wilden Kaiser, at the invitation of the Austrian Alpine Club. They came together to exchange knowledge, share experiences and learn from one another – laying the foundations for what would become ICAR – the International Commission for Alpine Rescue, officially founded in 1955.

Today, ICAR has grown into a global network of 141 member organisations across 41 countries.

This remarkable network reflects the enduring spirit of collaboration, cooperation and shared commitment to saving lives in the mountains.

Today, we honour that spirit – and the tireless dedication of the many people who put themselves at risk to keep others safe in the mountains.

Mountain Rescue Ireland, of which we are founding members alongside Kerry Mountain Rescue Team, and which continues to represent all Mountain Rescue Teams in Ireland, is proud to be one of those 141 member organisations.

Here’s to the pioneers of 1948, and to everyone continuing their legacy today.

Callout 27.08.26;

At 1107hrs today, the team received a request from Police to assist a walker who had taken a fall in the vicinity of Carn Mountain. The casualty who was in a party of 2, fell while descending the steep flank of the peak, and sustained injuries commensurate with falling 30-40metres on difficult terrain. The Team responded, locating and treating the casualty before evacuating them by stretcher downhill to Lough Shannagh. Due to the nature of injuries, SAR Air Support had already been requested with Rescue 199 from Prestwick air lifting the casualty to hospital.

Thanks to Police SAR, ARCC and the crew of Rescue 199 for their assistance in addition to 10 members responding and standing down at 1521hrs.

Callout 23.08.26;

At 1230hrs today we received a request via the Police to assist a walker with a diagnosed leg fracture at Kodak Corner in Rostrevor Forest. The team responded, located, stabilised, packaged and stretchered the casualty to track access. After a short Land Rover journey to road access, the casualty handed over to an Ambulance for onward transfer to hospital.

Thanks to everyone assisting today, including a passing Doctor and other members of the public, in addition to which we had a total of 14 members respond with stand down at 1623hrs.

Callouts 16.08.26;

At 1943hrs today, the team received a request via Police to assist with a group reported missing. The group had been expected back from a simple walk in the Silent Valley area but failed to return or respond to any communication and was now 3hrs overdue. Concern was heightened when it was suggested that the group may have intended to go wild swimming. The team responded, and given the potential severity, requested both SARDA Dogs and SAR Aircraft. Thankfully the group had not been swimming, instead spending several hours walking in mist before popping out as the team carried out an initial search.

On return to base the team received a second request via Police to assist an injured walker. The individual who was part of a group had sustained a knee injury had been endeavouring to get themselves back down. The team responded and was able to assist the casualty back to road access for onward transfer to hospital.

We wish all assisted well.

A total of 16 members responded and stood down at 2247hrs.

Callout 03.08.26;

At 1352hrs today, the team received a request from Police to assist a walker with a lower leg injury. The casualty, who was part of a group of 3, stumbled while descending the Ben Crom River, sustaining a suspected ankle sprain. The team responded, approaching via the Banns Road as best access and subsequent egress if a stretcher evacuation was necessary. While en-route, we got an update that the Air Ambulance was in the area and able to taxi our casualty and friends to civilisation, resulting in a short effortless stroll for us!

A total of 11 members responded with stand down at 16.26hrs.

Callout 01.08.26;

At 2221hrs, the team received a request from Police to assist a walker with a debilitating leg injury. The casualty who was part of a group of eleven had been undertaking the Mourne Seven Sevens when they sustained the injury as a result of a slip descending Cove Mountain. Initial support and guidance was provided by a Co-ordinator while the team responded. With the group able to make some progress, the team met with the group on the Brandy Pad before an assessment and ongoing support to the Bloody Bridge track and vehicle access. On arrival, two further group members were treated for exhaustion and also supported to vehicle access while the remainder continued to Newcastle unaided. All casualties were transferred to Newcastle by team vehicles and for onward transport to care.

A total of 12 members responded with stand down at 0212hrs.

At 1408 hrs today, the team received a request from CoastGuard to assist a person who had taken a fall in the vicinity of Cove Cave. The Team responded, located and treated the casualty before transferring by team vehicle to road access and onward travel to hospital

A total of 10 members responded with the full team on standby and stood down at 1644 hrs.

Callout 24/7/26: at 12:19hrs the team received a request via police to assist a person who sustained a lower leg injury while taking part in an organised bouldering activity . The team responded, located the injured person and stabilised the injury before carrying them to road access for hand over to NIAS HART/Ambulance crews for further assessment and transfer to hospital.

Callout 22.07.26;

At 1453 hrs yesterday, the team received a request via NIAS to assist an injured walker. The individual had been ascending Donard via the Col when they tripped, sustaining a lower leg injury. With advice from a Coordinator, the casualty, with assistance from friends and fellow hill walkers, was able to start descending. Meanwhile the team responded, provided further assessment and supported the casualty for the remainder of the descent to track access for onward transfer to road access and Hospital.

A total of 11 members responded with the full team on standby and stood down at 1810 hrs.
