The Boo Charity

The Boo Charity Over 20 years of empowering young people through education & life skills šŸ“š Giving Opportunity, Not Charity.

Over 20 years of empowering young people in Kenya, through education and life skills. We believe that education, empowerment and employment is the key to breaking the poverty cycle. Working with 5 projects in Kenya, we’ve created a sustainable platform for change. Our Story:
Sarah Hicks (known as ā€˜Boo’ to friends and family) lost her life to cancer in October 2002 at the age of 36. Sarah was a gen

tle, determined and caring person, with a wonderful spirit. Sarah showed vast amounts of strength and drive throughout her later years as she searched for alternative treatment for her illness in Kenya. During that time she made many friends who were touched by the compassion and love she had for those less fortunate than herself. The impact Sarah had on countless people’s lives is hard to put into words. Sarah would be proud to know that twenty years after her passing she has left an extraordinary legacy in Kenya which has helped provide a future for over 600 young ladies through the development of valuable life skills. This has led to some amazing stories of incredible young people coming out of poverty to establish their own successful businesses and enterprises. By helping children and young adults in a sustainable way the ā€˜Boo’ charity has made Sarah’s wish come true. Our Projects:
We now work with 5 projects:
- Nyamache Life Skills Centre: Fully funded by Boo, this Life Skills Centre offers 5 training courses to young people in need.
- Nyamwanga ECD: Funding teachers’ and cooks’ wages, school uniforms and learning materials for over 170 pre-schoolers.
- Busire ECD: Supporting access to education for over 150 6-7 year olds in this extremely poor rural area.
- Kibera ECD: Providing primary education to over 150 of the poorest children in Kibera, Africa's largest slum.
- Kibera Football Program: Run by Kibera Mpira Mtanni (KIMMTA), holding regular football matches and tournaments.

Shamba update from Nyamache 🌱

Our new shamba, purchased thanks to the support of Bournemouth North Rotary and Norco, is already showing a really positive harvest.

A large part of the land is now planted with maize, helping to provide enough food to ensure all students and staff recieve a daily meal at the Life Skills Centre.

We’ve also dedicated space to vegetables, building on the success of our original shamba, which continues to thrive.

New to this site, we’ve planted bananas, a long-term crop that will support both food security and future income.

Down by the river, Napier grass is growing well too. This will be sold locally at market, with an exciting long-term goal of generating enough income to eventually purchase a school cow, providing fresh milk for the centre.

Step by step, the shamba is building both food and future sustainability.

Just Ā£104 to go… who can help push Jo over the finish line?

After an incredible walk from Cheltenham to Bournemouth, Jo is resting her feet (rightly so!) but the challenge isn’t over just yet.

She’s now just 3% away from her goal, which will be funding new playgrounds in two ECD schools in Kenya.

Every donation, no matter how small, helps bring her closer to the finish line and closer to transforming playtime for these children.

If you can spare anything, please help Jo finish her Steps for Swings challenge!

She did it šŸ‘ Jo walked all the way from Cheltenham to Bournemouth to raise funds for safe play equipment in Kenya, and we couldn’t be prouder!

Through blisters, tough terrain, and sheer determination, she’s now reached 94% of her Ā£4,000 target.

Just £224 to go.

Every pound helps bring safe, joyful play back to these children. Let’s get her over the finish line šŸ’›

Final video from Jo, who has officially completed her Steps For Swings challenge today! šŸŽ‰

Jo Blunden – what an incredible achievement. Completing such a tough journey from Cheltenham to Bournemouth is no small feat. We know it hasn’t been easy, but you’ve absolutely smashed it, and we couldn’t be prouder šŸ‘

A huge thank you as well to everyone who has supported Jo along the way. Your encouragement and donations mean everything. There’s still time to give, so please help us push Jo over her target and make these play sets a reality for the little learners.

As Jo highlights, 500 KES is roughly a day’s wage for many farmers in Kenya. Families supporting students at our schools are living on unstable, low incomes and deserve so much more. Creating a safe, secure place for children to play will truly make a world of difference.

If you can, please donate here:

Thank you šŸ’›
