Dane Valley Woods aims to be a sustainable, community-owned wildspace in the heart of Margate

Dane Valley Woods is a community woodland in the heart of Margate. It is a greenspace that is run by volunteers for the benefit of both people and wildlife, and is being established on a former landfill. Few parts of Kent have as little trees as Thanet, making a new woodland particularly good news for the area. The 13 acre site lies next to the Dane Valley Allotments, and the aim is to involve as many people as possible through practical task days which run on the last Sunday of every month from 10am until 1pm, wildlife talks and walks; as well as other events all taking place at the woodland.

Just in time for this Sunday's monthly morning of tasks, one of our trusty mowers is back from the annual maintenance check over.

Due to the predicted high winds, we are taking the early decision to call off this Sunday's monthly task day.

However, the good news is that we are rescheduling to next Sunday instead (1 November).

The previously issued advice about stormy weather and avoiding the woods during these times remains valid, with the unsettled conditions continuing into next week.

Storm Austen is due to cause disruption tomorrow (Friday), with a yellow weather warning in place for high winds, so we are sharing some advice from The Woodland Trust regarding the potential hazards in woodlands.

We have our monthly task day on Sunday (see events page), having looked at the forecast this is still going ahead, we will post details here if the situation changes.

Last Friday we were delighted to welcome a team from Thanet District Council for a volunteering session at the woods 🌳

Despite the less than favourable conditions, they worked extremely hard and made a huge difference:

✅ New glade established off Speckled Wood Walk
✅ New woodchip path leading into the glade
✅ New dead hedge at the entrance to the glade
✅ Re-establishment of a path joining Walnut Walk to Fennel Footpath

They were rewarded with coffee generously supplied by Curve Coffee Roasters and homemade carrot and ginger cake, courtesy of Amanda.

If you have a volunteering scheme at work and fancy getting down the woods with colleagues, drop us a line. A big thank you to Lindsay for reaching out on behalf of the team, and helping us to get through our list of tasks! 💚

We are most grateful to Sebastian Cox Ltd and his team for their assistance with our first ever coppicing last February. The difference in the space of 8 months since then is quite remarkable 🌳🌳🌳

A massive thank you to the Tesco Metro community champions, Jacqueline and Eve!

They arranged to support the woods through the community bookshelf scheme, where funds from donated books are given directly to local good causes.

We were chosen for July and August, and were amazed when invited to the store to discover that the book sales had raised £400 for us!

Jacqueline also donated a mobile water bowser, which will be invaluable in helping to water small saplings during drought conditions 💚

Have you noticed our wider paths?

Yesterday (Thursday) we were very pleased to welcome George Cooper of save minster marshes to the woods. He most generously gave up his time to use his field and brush mower to knock back vegetation encroachment upon the paths.

Path widening has many benefits including increasing perceptions of safety, acting as fire breaks, and enhancing biodiversity. A buzzard was spotted on a nearby tree, watching the proceedings with keen interest!

Whilst we had George’s assistance, the opportunity was taken to create path scallops and mini glades too.

A documentary about the Save Minster Marshes campaign has been made by a young film maker called Connor Carruthers, and also features George - the link is in the comments.

What a fantastic turnout we had for our monthly session yesterday (Sunday) - an amazing 28 volunteers!!

With so many willing hands, we got far more done than we could have hoped for!

✅ Two existing wild flower meadows cut and collected
✅ One glade mowed
✅ A new meadow was seeded with green hay and bramble roots dug up
✅ Tree saplings weeded
✅ "Lizard's Loop" signposts reinstated
✅ Five bags of litter collected

Phew! It is certainly true that many hands make light work! We are overwhelmed with gratitude to our fantastic volunteers this month.... thank you!! 💚💚💚
