QEQM Hospital League of Friends

QEQM Hospital League of Friends Registered charity number 210234. We have no staff, only unpaid volunteers, and have minimal overheads so what we raise is spent in the Hospital.

We are a registered charity (No. 210234) dedicated to raise monies to fund the purchase of equipment, facilities & amenities to benefit the patients & staff at the QEQM Hospital.

Thanks to the generosity of our supporters we were delighted to recently agree to fund 20 new wheelchairs. It can sometimes be challenging, given the very large area the Hospital now covers and its increased footfall, for some patients needing wheelchairs to move around the Hospital with ease. Having these additional wheelchairs will bring about a significant improvement, enhancing the experience of patients and helping ensure they arrive punctually for appointments 😊👍
Please help us make a difference to our Hospital in ways like this. You can do so in various ways:
- making a donation
- leaving us a legacy in your will
- supporting one of our fundraising events
- visiting our Tea Bar & Shop in the Hospital, or
- fundraising on our behalf.
Please visit www.qeqmfriends.com for more details.

Our AGM saw a changing of the guard in its Chairmanship with Sue Leach taking over from Sylvia Pheils. We are delighted though that Sylvia, who becomes Honorary President, is remaining on our committee so we will continue to get the benefit of her knowledge and experience built up over the amazing period of 30 years.
Sylvia moved to Thanet in 1984 when her husband Peter was appointed Consultant Surgeon to the then Thanet District Hospital. She became involved with the Tear Appeal to raise £1 million to secure a 24-hour A & E facility at the Hospital and from there was asked to join the committee of the League of Friends in 1996. Since then she has performed various roles including Secretary, dealing with public relations and organising many fundraising events (including the popular annual Fashion Show that used to be held at the Winter Gardens) culminating in her becoming Chairman. She took over at a challenging time in the aftermath of Covid and following the sad deaths of stalwarts Jeremy & Amanda Voizey, but thanks to her stewardship our charity has continued to give valuable and much-appreciated support to the QEQM Hospital. Sylvia became involved and has put in so much effort “because I thought the Hospital matters to every person who lives, works or visits Thanet and I still think that today.”
Sue is absolutely no stranger to the Hospital and its staff either. She was a student nurse there 1975-78, living in the nurses’ home and enjoying taking part in the Hospital Drama Group’s pantomimes. She’s worked in many wards and departments over the years and eventually became Ward Manager on Cheerful Sparrows Ward. She retired in 2014 but went back part time doing teaching and development until 2022. Sue feels like the Hospital is a second home to her and, as she says she can’t get the QEQM out of her system, was delighted to join the League of Friends three years ago. She said “I love being involved with such a wonderful group of people. My aims as the new Chairman are to support all the trustees and volunteers to enable us to continue our charity’s good work to support patients & staff, to explore new ways to raise money and to ensure our longevity so we can thrive well beyond our 80th anniversary next year.”

At our AGM yesterday evening we were delighted to be joined by civic representatives the Mayor & Deputy Mayor of Margate Cllr. Leo Britcher & Cllr. Tamara S. Campbell, the Mayor & Deputy Mayor of Ramsgate Cllr. Raushan Ara & Cllr. Jane Hetherington and the Deputy Mayor of Broadstairs Cllr. Steve Roberts. They are shown with our outgoing Chairman Sylvia Pheils and incoming Chairman Sue Leach.
Sylvia outlined the progress our charity has made over the last year enabling us to spend £101,949 on funding items to benefit patients, staff & visitors ranging from a TV to a very sophisticated training manikin simulator. By far our biggest source of regular income is from our Tea Bar & Shop and this is supplemented by money raised by our fundraising events, legacies and from generous donors & fundraisers - which this year included the Police Panto, Ramsgate Ladies Darts League and Hannah Berry, our first ever runner in the London Marathon. Sylvia thanked all these, as well as the wonderful volunteers who man our Tea Bar & Shop (which is soon to be refurbished) along with our hardworking committee of Trustees.
Sylvia concluded by handing over the reins of our chairmanship to Sue, whose first act was to invite Sylvia to become our Honorary President in recognition of the outstanding role she has played in the ongoing success of our charity. Also, Sue awarded certificates of appreciation to several of our committee in recognition of their many years of service.
2027 will be our charity’s 80th anniversary and we very much look forward to enjoying a programme of celebratory events, planning for which is well underway.
More is to follow about Sylvia & Sue and the terrific contribution they have made over many years and continue to make to the life of the Hospital - so please keep watching this space 👀 😊

It’s National Volunteers Week and we’d like to take this opportunity to give a huge thank-you to all our wonderful volunteers for their dedication, support and commitment which is very much appreciated 😊👍👏 As a token of that, we were delighted today to offer those who man our very popular Tea Bar & Shop and trolley service in the Hospital a cream tea - prepared & served by lovely Jackie & her team at the coffee shop in Youngs Nurseries in Broadstairs. A great time was had by all 😊

Thanks to our supporters, at our last committee meeting we were able to approve applications for funding totalling £6,880 for:
- new window blinds for four of the side rooms in Sandwich Bay Ward, which will be coloured to match the palliative care themes in each of the rooms, and
- 2 intravenous anaesthesia pumps to be used for patients attending the Hospital’s theatres, leading to an enhanced experience for them.

We recently approved a request for funding to support patients in the Hospital living with dementia, prompted by a generous donation to our charity from a local family in memory of their late father in gratitude for the care given to him while he was a patient in AMU B. The family requested the money be used to benefit dementia patients through music which he loved listening to. So, after consulting Senior Specialist Practitioner in Dementia Care Emily, we were delighted to use this donation to approve a request for:
- 3 Musical Walkabout sessions. These are live interactive events to enhance patient, staff & visitor wellbeing aimed at patients living with dementia in a hospital environment. The sessions are being provided by Kent-based community interest company Musical Walkabout CIC. One has already been given on St. Margaret’s Ward and another one took place today on Sandwich Bay & Deal Wards with a further session planned for St. Margaret’s Ward in June. Shown are Nina (the company’s founder who gave the uplifting and very well-received performances accompanying herself on the guitar), Nina with Emily & Sandwich Bay Ward Sister Violet and with Deal Ward Sister Nada & some of her colleagues.
- 6 headphones with preloaded different genres of music to suit patients’ preferences.
