A stunning example of Arum Maculatum (Lords-&-Ladies, Cuckoo Pint) seen on Conygre Mead recently. Lots of these plants can be spotted on the nature reserve at this time of year.

They look spectacular but are poisonous to humans & a trap to insects. This plant is attracting insects to the male spadix by omitting a foul urinous smell & by raising the ambient temperature within the plant by up to 15 °C. Once in the plant a ring of hairs traps the insect where the female flowers dust it with pollen before it manages to escape 🪰
