What we do: Sea-Change provides action-centred learning and seamanship training for young people and vulnerable adults by offering an alternative approach to learning in a structured and safe yet challenging environment. Individuals can return independently of their group to undertake traditional seamanship training, which can lead to a maritime career. How we do it: Participants live and work

aboard a our steel, engineless Thames sailing barge Blue Mermaid. They take part in anything the ship and group needs and are encouraged to return and reinforce both their learning and confidence. Why we do it: Engaging young people positively in their community is one of the greatest challenges faced by British society. Many are trapped in a downward spiral of poor parenting, petty crime, re-offending, drugs and alcohol. The cause of this is a lack of the right sort of support for young people when they most need it. Our mentoring scheme helps prepare for a programme and to transfer positive change into normal life. The experience is intense and demanding yet takes place in an environment young people consider home while learning the skills needed to guide them in the wider world and workplace.

Tim Bees’ drone shots of the match illustrate the drama of the day. Blue Mermaid, Niagara and Edme broke away as a pack and tussled for the line with the lead changing hands several times over the course. At one point Blue Mermaid stole the front position but as we closed the line, the breeze veered more northerly and we were bested in a tacking duel with Edme. Well earned 2nd place for us though and good close racing with Niagara.

Well, the day started nicely! Winding the anchor up we thought we might be in for a gentle sail despite the forecast, but as we went the sky darkened, the breeze came and it rained, and rained. After so many months of sunshine and gentle breeze it was exhilarating to be sailing fast in a bit of wind and reminds us just how strong and reliable Blue Mermaid is!

It’s been a week! Blue Mermaid has hosted an exhibition of barge history, swing jazz dance evening, a literary evening and a shanty night. We’ve had nearly 600 visitors while here and have talked a great deal about barges and the work of the Sea-Change Sailing Trust
