Summer Camp 2026 – Sunday – The Final Day!

And just like that… Summer Camp 2026 was coming to an end.

After six fantastic days in Cornwall, Sunday was all about one thing…

PACKING!

With another group due to arrive at Tomperrow only a couple of hours after we left, we had plenty to do. Everything needed packing away, the site needed cleaning and we wanted to make absolutely sure we left it ready for the next group to enjoy.

One of our biggest challenges was the tents.

Despite having some lovely weather during the week, the morning dew meant everything was rather damp first thing. With the number of tents we’d taken with us, the LAST thing we wanted was to get home and have to put the entire camp back up again just to dry them!

So there was plenty of moving tents around, turning them over and waiting for the Cornish weather to do its job.

Thankfully… SUCCESS!

Everything was eventually packed away dry, the trailer was loaded, the minibuses were ready and Tomperrow was left ready for its next visitors.

Before we headed home, there is something else from the week that we need to mention…

🎂 BIRTHDAYS! 🎂

Somehow, we managed to celebrate THREE birthdays during Summer Camp this year!

A very Happy Birthday to Bruce, one of our Young Leaders, John, who joined us for his very first Summer Camp as a leader, and, of course, Garfield!

And what better way could Garfield possibly spend her birthday than…

Driving a minibus all the way home from Cornwall!

What a birthday present from Leagrave Scout Group!

As we look back over the week, it really has been an absolutely fantastic Summer Camp.

We’ve ridden horses, visited the RNLI, spent time on the beach, shot ri**es, gone pioneering, walked a 10km night hike, visited Healeys, been kayaking, SUPing and sailing on the sea, played games, had quizzes, danced, tried Pilates, enjoyed a little bit of pampering and somehow found time for quite a lot more in between!

Most importantly, we’ve watched our Scouts and Young Leaders try new things, learn new skills, work together, make memories and have a lot of fun along the way.

A massive thank you has to go to all of the adult leaders and Young Leaders who gave up their time to make the week possible.

Taking a group away for a week like this doesn’t just happen. There is a huge amount of planning and preparation beforehand, followed by some very long days once we’re actually on camp.

But seeing what our young people get out of it makes it all worthwhile.

We’d also like to say a massive thank you to Tomperrow Scout Campsite for being our home for the week.

We stayed here four years ago and loved it, and this visit certainly hasn’t changed our minds. It’s a wonderful campsite and having exclusive use of the site made it even more special.

We can highly recommend it to other Scout groups looking for somewhere to stay in Cornwall.

So… will we be back?

Absolutely!

Although Summer Camp 2027 is going to look VERY different.

Next year we’re heading to CamJam, where we’re expecting to be camping alongside more than 3,000 Scouts, Explorers and Young Leaders.

Going from having an entire campsite to ourselves to sharing one with several thousand other people…

That might be a slight change of pace! 😂

An absolutely brilliant week, some fantastic memories and a group of very tired Scouts, Young Leaders and leaders heading home!

Summer Camp 2026 – Saturday

And somehow we had reached our LAST full day of Summer Camp!

For our final big activity day, we headed down to Loe Beach Watersports, where Martin and the team were waiting to look after us.

We visited Loe Beach four years ago on our last Cornwall Summer Camp, so we already knew we were going to be in for a fantastic day.

On arrival, everyone got kitted out in wetsuits before we split into four groups and headed for the water.

Throughout the day, everyone rotated around four different activities:

🏄 SUPing
🛶 Single sea kayaking
🛶 Double sea kayaking
⛵ Sailing

Now, you might say that Scouts do these sorts of activities all the time...

And you'd be right!

We're very fortunate as a group that we normally manage to get our Scouts onto the water at least once a year.

But doing these activities out on the sea is a completely different experience to doing them on the lakes that we're normally used to.

And what a day we had for it!

The sun was shining, the wind was blowing – but thankfully not too much – and there was plenty of fun being had out on the water.

We rotated through the different activities, stopped for lunch at Loe Beach and then carried on before eventually having to drag ourselves away and head back to camp.

A massive thank you to Martin and everyone at Loe Beach Watersports for looking after us so well.

It's a fantastic little watersports centre and, having now visited twice, we can definitely say we'll be back again.

If any other Scout groups are heading down to this part of Cornwall and looking for some water activities, we can highly recommend giving them a visit.

Back at camp, there was another very important matter to deal with...

THE 2nd ANNUAL PAPER PLATE AWARDS!

Over the previous 24 hours, everyone had been voting for who they thought deserved each of our highly prestigious awards.

This was the second year Chil had organised them, which obviously means they're now officially an annual tradition.

Even better, he's apparently just bought another 160 paper plates...

So by our calculations, he's now committed himself to roughly another TEN YEARS of Summer Camps with us.

We're not entirely sure he realised that when he bought them!

Interestingly, this makes it TWO YEARS IN A ROW that whichever team Bob happens to be on has won the quiz – despite him having different teammates each year.

Then it was time for another very important part of our final night...

FISH & CHIPS!

For our final evening meal, we had ordered from Kellaway's Fish and Chips in Threemilestone.

And this isn't just any fish and chip shop – Kellaway's came 3rd in the UK for Takeaway of the Year at the National Fish & Chip Awards 2025!

Having now tried them ourselves, we can certainly see why.

A massive shout-out and thank you to Amanda and the whole team at Kellaway's for getting such a large order prepared for us, ready on time and, most importantly, still lovely and hot!

It went down extremely well with everyone and was a brilliant meal for our final night in Cornwall.

With everyone suitably fed, there was only one thing left to do...

PARTY!

The music went on, there was plenty of old-school dancing and everyone got the chance to let their hair down and have some fun together on our final night.

It was really nice to see everyone just enjoying themselves after such a busy week.

Although I'm fairly certain that while the Scouts were dancing, somewhere in the back of every leader's mind was the same thought...

Tomorrow we've somehow got to pack ALL of this up, get it back into the trailer and drive all the way home from Cornwall!

But that's tomorrow's problem...

Summer Camp 2026 – Friday

Day Five, and somehow we were already getting towards the end of our week in Cornwall!

We started Friday morning by finishing off the shooting and completing the final test shoots for the Master at Arms badge and NSRA Youth Proficiency Scheme.

It was fantastic to see just how much everyone had improved throughout the week.

Looking back at some of the very first targets they shot compared with their final competition targets, there was a huge difference. All of our Scouts and Young Leaders did extremely well and should be very proud of what they achieved.

With the shooting completed, early in the afternoon we headed over to Healeys Cornish Cyder Farm – home of Rattler!

We had a really interesting tour around the farm, learning about the history of c***r making and seeing how the apples eventually make their way through the process to become the finished product.

For some strange reason, one of the particularly popular parts with the Scouts and Young Leaders was the tasting room…

Don’t worry – theirs was apple juice!

There were different varieties of apple juice for them to sample, and everyone certainly seemed quite happy to make sure they had conducted some thorough testing!

Meanwhile, a couple of our leaders spotted another important opportunity and disappeared off to the on-site café for a cream tea.

Well, somebody had to test those as well…

After a great afternoon at Healeys, we headed back to our wonderful campsite.

There was still plenty going on once we got back.

We managed to fit in some more pioneering, with everyone working together to build a large climbing frame using pioneering poles and ropes.

Then it was time for something a little different…

PILATES!

Everyone had the opportunity to join in with a Pilates session, which provided plenty of entertainment – particularly watching some of our adult leaders attempting to get themselves into some of the poses!

We’re not sure everyone was quite as flexible as they thought they were…

After all that strenuous exercise, it was clearly time for a bit of pampering!

Anyone who wanted to join in could grab a face mask, relax for a while and even have their nails painted.

We were actually quite surprised by just how many of the Scouts and Young Leaders decided to give the nail varnish a go!

That’s what camp is all about – trying something you might not normally do, having a laugh and not worrying too much about what everyone else thinks.

But Friday still wasn’t finished…

After dinner, Chil took charge of our now apparently ANNUAL Summer Camp Quiz!

We had one last year, so Chil has decided that makes it a tradition. Unfortunately for him, that also means he now has to keep coming to Summer Camp every year to run it!

We split everyone into teams and had a mixture of music rounds, general knowledge and, appropriately, a whole section about Cornwall.

Everyone really got involved, there was plenty of discussion between the teams and it turned into a brilliant evening back at camp.

We’re not going to tell you which team won just yet…

We’ll save that for tomorrow!

But we do have yesterday’s Camp Quiz answer to reveal.

We asked:

To the nearest hundred, how many pellets did our Scouts and Young Leaders fire on Thursday while working towards their Master at Arms badge?

The answer was…

1,000 pellets!

That’s an awful lot of pellets – and hopefully explains why we could see such an improvement by the end of the week!

Summer Camp 2026 – Thursday

Day Four, and after a few very early mornings, we decided everyone had earned something rather special...

A LIE-IN!

There was no rushing everyone out of bed first thing this morning. Instead, we had a much more relaxed start to the day, with a continental breakfast where everyone could get up and eat at their own pace.

Sometimes on a week-long camp, you need a day where things just slow down a little bit!

Most of Thursday was spent enjoying our fantastic campsite.

Throughout the day, Marmite continued working with small groups of Scouts and Young Leaders on their Master at Arms badge and the NSRA Youth Proficiency Scheme.

With the shooting running in smaller groups, everyone else had plenty to keep themselves occupied around camp.

We set up a whole collection of games and activities, including giant Jenga, football, frisbee and table tennis. It was one of those days where people could move between activities, relax with their friends and simply enjoy being on camp without having to rush off somewhere.

And it wasn't only the Scouts and Young Leaders getting new experiences this week...

A few of our adult leaders had arranged a little adventure of their own and took the opportunity to leave camp for a while to go jet skiing!

They came back having thoroughly enjoyed themselves.

It just goes to prove that Scouting isn't only about giving young people opportunities to try something new. Being an adult volunteer can sometimes give you the chance to have a go at things you've never done before as well!

We did, however, make sure that nobody managed to spend the entire day on the campsite...

Once evening arrived, it was walking boots on as everyone headed out for a 10-kilometre night hike around the local area.

After a deliberately relaxed start to the day, it was a great way to get everyone out exploring the area around our campsite. After 10 kilometres of walking, I don't think too many people needed much persuading when it was finally time for bed!

So Thursday might have started with a lie-in and a leisurely breakfast, but it definitely didn't finish quite so leisurely!

And, of course, there's still the small matter of our Camp Quiz...

Yesterday we asked:

How many quarter pounders did we cook for dinner?

The answer was...

72 quarter pounders!

Yes, we really did cook that many!

Summer Camp 2026 – Wednesday

Day Three, and another very busy day!

We started Wednesday morning with a trip to Falmouth Lifeboat

Once there, we split into smaller groups and spent plenty of time being shown around the station by the fantastic volunteers.

A huge thank you to all of the RNLI volunteers who gave up their time to show us around, answer what seemed like an endless supply of questions and tell us all about the work they do.

We learnt about the history of the lifeboat station and how lifeboats and their equipment have changed over the years.

One of the highlights was being able to go aboard their brand-new all-weather Shannon class lifeboat, Decibel Too, which had only recently been dedicated.

The Scouts and Young Leaders were able to have a proper look around inside, learn about the equipment on board and hear the story behind the name Decibel Too.

We also spent some time learning about the RNLI's Float to Live message – some really simple knowledge that could one day make a massive difference.

After thanking the volunteers and saying goodbye, it was time to make up for something we'd missed the day before...

THE BEACH!

Tuesday's weather conditions had meant we'd made the decision not to take the Scouts swimming, but thankfully on Wednesday we were able to rearrange the programme and finally get down there.

The weather wasn't quite as nice as some of the weather we'd been enjoying during camp, but that certainly didn't stop us!

While we were there, the lifeguards very kindly spent some time talking to our Scouts and Young Leaders about what they do, the dangers to look out for at the beach and how to stay safe around the sea.

We also discovered that one of the lifeguards was a fellow Scouter from Wales!

It's always amazing how wherever you go, you seem to bump into another member of the Scouting family somewhere along the way. It was great for our Scouts to meet someone who not only works to keep people safe on the beach, but also gives their time to Scouting back home in Wales.

For quite a few of our young people, going to the beach isn't something they get to do regularly, so having the opportunity to learn directly from the lifeguards was really valuable.

And, of course, there was still plenty of time to actually enjoy being at the beach!

Afterwards, it was back to our wonderful campsite – but the day's activities weren't finished quite yet.

Marmite carried on working with the Scouts and Young Leaders towards their Master at Arms badge and the NSRA Youth Proficiency Scheme.

For this, we need to say another very big thank you, this time to Ross Park Scout Group.

They very kindly allowed us to borrow their ri**es for the week. Without their support and equipment, we simply wouldn't have been able to give our Scouts and Young Leaders this opportunity during camp.

Another packed day and another lot of new experiences!

Now... time for the quiz.

Summer Camp 2026 – Tuesday

Day Two, and already the Cornish weather had decided it was in charge of our programme!

Our original plan for Tuesday was to split into two groups. Half would spend the morning horse riding while the other half headed to the beach for swimming, before swapping over in the afternoon.

Unfortunately, the weather had other ideas.

With the conditions at the beach, we made the decision that it simply wasn't safe to take the Scouts swimming. Disappointing, but one of the joys of Scout camps is being able to change the plan when needed.

Thankfully, the horse riding could still go ahead, so we headed over to Newton Equestrian and Leisure Centre.

We first visited Newton Equestrian four years ago on our previous summer camp in Cornwall, and the Scouts thoroughly enjoyed it then. This year's visit was even better.

For the vast majority of our Scouts and Young Leaders, this was their first time properly being around horses, let alone actually getting on and riding one!

Everyone had the opportunity to ride, while the couple of more experienced riders amongst us were given some additional exercises and challenges to try.

But apparently owning a horse isn't just a case of getting on it and going for a ride...

Everyone also got involved with grooming and general stable care, including the particularly glamorous job of mucking out.

We can't say that was everyone's favourite part of the day!

A massive thank you needs to go to Lisa and everyone at Newton Equestrian and Leisure Centre When they heard that we'd had to cancel the beach part of our programme, they very kindly allowed us to use a room at the centre.

Never ones to waste an opportunity, we used the unexpected spare time to start working through some of the theory for our Master at Arms badge and the NSRA Youth Proficiency Scheme, which we would be working towards throughout the week.

One of the nicest parts of the day was hearing the team at Newton compliment our Scouts and Young Leaders on their behaviour and attitude throughout their visit.

With this being our biggest summer camp yet, we were particularly proud to hear that.

So despite the Cornish weather completely changing Tuesday's programme, we still managed to have a fantastic day.

Sometimes Plan B works out pretty well!

Now, yesterday's quiz...

We asked how much fuel our three vehicles used just getting everyone, the trailer and all our kit down to Cornwall.

The answer was 138.04 litres!

Summer Camp 2026 – Monday

We might be home, but now it's time to look back at what we actually got up to on Summer Camp!

You may notice these posts are arriving a little late. While we were away, we deliberately didn't post publicly that the group was away from home for the week. Besides, we were having far too much fun on the campsite to spend our time writing Facebook posts!

So, back to Monday morning...

After meeting bright and early at 7am, we somehow managed to get everyone, all the kit and an impressive amount of luggage loaded and were on the road by about 7:15am.

Our little convoy consisted of our two minibuses – “Emma Says So” and “Simon Says” – followed by “Marmite’s Mule” towing the trailer.

This was officially our biggest summer camp yet, with more Scouts, Young Leaders and adult leaders attending than we have ever taken away before. A massive thank you to everyone who came along and helped make the week possible.

Our destination was Tomperrow Scout Campsite in Cornwall. It was certainly a long drive down, although judging by the singing coming from the minibuses, some of our Scouts were determined to provide their own entertainment for most of the journey!

Eventually we arrived in Cornwall and, after a quick orientation, it was time to get camp built.

We had several brand-new tents making their first appearance this year, so there was plenty of instruction along the way. Rather than simply putting them up for the Scouts, we wanted everyone to understand how they went together and how to look after them properly.

Before long, our home for the week was taking shape.

Once camp was established, we had a proper tour of the site. We last stayed at Tomperrow four years ago and it was great to be back. Even better, we had exclusive use of the site for the week, giving us the whole place to ourselves.

With everyone settled in, pasta bake was on the menu for our first evening meal.

But apparently travelling all the way to Cornwall and putting up an entire camp wasn't enough for one day...

After dinner, out came the pioneering poles and ropes!

The Scouts and Young Leaders were given a pioneering challenge to complete. There was plenty of teamwork, problem-solving and the occasional moment of looking at a pile of poles and wondering quite how it was all going to work.

We won't tell you exactly what they built just yet... there's a reason for that, which you'll discover in tomorrow's quiz question!

Normally our first evening would also include a campfire, but with the very dry weather and fire restrictions in place, campfires were completely off the menu – not just for Monday, but unfortunately for the whole week.

During camp we gave our parents a daily quiz question, with a prize at the end of the week for the person who managed to get the most correct answers.

As we're reliving the week on Facebook, we thought everyone else should get a chance to play along too!

After a 7am start, a very long drive, plenty of singing, building our home for the week and somehow still finding enough energy for some pioneering, Monday was complete.

Summer Camp 2026 was officially underway.

What a weekend!

This weekend, 11 of our leaders swapped the Scout Hut for a slightly different setting and spent the weekend aboard a canal boat.

It was a great opportunity to spend some proper time together, especially as we were lucky enough to have leaders from every single section represented. As well as having plenty of laughs, it gave us time to talk about upcoming camps and events, share ideas between sections and discuss what works well and best practice across the Group.

For some of our leaders, this was their first ever time on a canal boat, so there were plenty of new experiences – taking the helm, working locks and learning just how much effort goes into getting a narrowboat from A to B. For others, it brought back some very fond memories of canal boat trips they had done themselves when they were Scouts.

A massive thank you has to go to the West Herts Narrowboat Trust for allowing us to use Dick's Folly for the weekend. We really couldn't recommend them highly enough to other Scout Groups thinking about giving narrowboating a go. They can take you right through from training and gaining your Scout permit to hiring one of their boats. They currently have Dick's Folly, which sleeps 12, and Pickles Folly, which sleeps 10.

Of course, no Scout trip would be complete without something unexpected happening...

On our way back we managed to pick up a tyre around the prop shaft. Yes, an actual tyre! After around an hour of trying to free it, we eventually managed to get it loose. A very big shout-out to Joe, who spent a considerable amount of that time upside down with his arms in the water through the w**d hatch trying to release it. It certainly wasn't an easy job!

We also owe an absolutely massive thank you to fellow boaters John and Sharon from Liberty Belle, out of Nantwich, who stopped and helped us. Their advice and assistance were invaluable, with John also getting stuck in and down the w**d hatch to help us free the tyre.

It was genuinely lovely meeting John and Sharon, along with their travelling companions – their two dogs and, rather unexpectedly, a tortoise! Yes, you read that correctly... they have a tortoise living aboard their canal boat!
