Why We Need Funding To Be Able To Continue With The Next Step.

🌸 Alongside gifting respite days to cancer warriors at the The Floating Florista Beach Hut purchased and refurbished in Gemma’s memory we are working on visiting senior schools (from HPV vaccination age) colleges, universities, work places aswell as educational, health & wellness and seafarer related events to keep spreading awareness and the importance of the HPV Vaccination, Routine Cervical Screening & Gynaecological Health.
🌸 Within the next few years I would like the awareness and information packs to be on all vessels where female crew are working away from home for months at a time so where ever they are in the world the can be confident in knowing that if a Cervical Screening is due while away from home rather than putting it to the back of their mind because of their work rotation they can book with recommended / reputable and English speaking (if needed) doctors and / or nurses accessible within the packs.
🌸 By sharing Gemma’s story women (and men) of all ages will hear how a perfect happy life with hopes, dreams and plans fell apart and can fall apart drastically overnight…..regardless to how fit and healthy or what age you are!
🌸 To make this next step happen The Floating Florista Foundation which funds the campaign needs funding to purchase the items needed to take out on the road, information packs which are distributed currently at superyacht events to be put together and to also maintain the beach hut with yearly maintenance, yearly licence and yearly insurances.
We don’t have staff or a CEO on a salary of £250,000 per year to pay so 100% of donations go straight into the necessary needs of the foundation to keep going and to make a difference all in memory of our beautiful daughter & sister former Florist & Yacht Stew Gemma Willis ~ Floating Florista

Can you name the 5 gynaecological cancers?

Are you up to date with your cervical screening or do you need to book your next appointment?
Don’t put it off because you’re scared, embarrassed or too busy because cervical cancer doesn’t always have symptoms
as in Gemma’s case!

SELF HPV TESTING -
EVERYTHING you need to know...

🩷 A new HPV self test is now an option for those people who have previously found it difficult to attend cervical screening at a GP or clinic
The NHS is beginning to roll out HPV self testing kits in England for women aged 30-65 who haven’t attended routine invitations.

Importantly -
➡️ It’s invitation only
➡️ It will be rolled out in phases
➡️ It does NOT replace routine clinician led cervical screening

❓WHY SCREEN?
🔬Cervical screening helps prevent cervical cancer by detecting high-risk HPV. Some types of HPV can cause changes to cervical cells which can usually be treated before cancer develops.

💉 Even if you’ve had the HPV vaccine, screening still matters, the vaccine doesn’t protect against every high risk HPV type.

❓So why offer self-testing?
For some people, fear, embarrassment, pain, previous trauma, disability or practical barriers can make cervical screening incredibly difficult.

🏡 Being able to take an initial HPV sample privately at home could help reach people who might otherwise remain unscreened.

⚠️ If high risk HPV is detected, you’ll need a clinician taken cervical screening test.
If it isn’t, you’ll be invited for screening again in five years.

🌸 Self testing is not a replacement for routine clinician led cervical screening. We don’t yet have evidence that switching to HPV self-testing is as effective at preventing cervical cancer as regularly attending cervical screening.
So if you can attend when invited for a routine screening please continue to do so.
This is about removing barriers and giving more people a route into screening.
And the more people screened, more high risk HPV can be identified, and more cervical cancers prevented 🙏🏻

💜 Wellbeing Wednesday: Do It For Gem 💜

This week is Cervical Screening Awareness Week, and we want to take a moment to honour the memory of Gemma Willis.

Gem was a vibrant, healthy, full-of-life florist and Head of Department who sadly passed away from cervical cancer in 2021 at just 30 years old. Two years earlier, she had received an abnormal smear test result but had no symptoms.

Her story is a powerful reminder that cervical cancer doesn't always come with warning signs.

Whether you're home on leave or working abroad, please make time for your cervical screening appointments and follow up on any abnormal results, even if you feel completely well. Screening can detect changes long before symptoms appear, when treatment is often most effective.

If you haven't already received it, the HPV vaccine is also an important step in protecting yourself against the high-risk strains of HPV responsible for most cervical cancer cases.
As crew, it's easy to put your own health at the bottom of the priority list. This is your reminder not to.

One appointment could save your life.

Do it for yourself.
Do it for your loved ones.
Do it for Gem. 💜

💉 The HPV vaccine is given free on the NHS in schools to girls and boys from the age of 12,
If you missed out at school it is still available free up to the age of 25.

For ages 25-45 it is available privately from £150 per dose.

Amazing news! Cervical cancer deaths in younger women have plummeted in England following the rollout of the HPV (human papillomavirus) vaccine, according to new research, published today in The Lancet.

Between 2020 and 2024, there were no deaths from cervical cancer in women aged 20-24 in England for the first time. HPV vaccine coverage in this group was close to 90%, and the vaccine was offered at age 12-13.

Our research helped prove the link between HPV and cervical cancer, and led to the development of the HPV vaccine. The vaccination programme in England has been shown to reduce cervical cancer incidence rates by up to 90%. It’s also important that people consider taking up cervical screening when invited, even if they’ve had the HPV vaccine. The HPV vaccine and cervical screening combined is the best way to prevent cervical cancer.

Until now, it’s not been possible to show directly that HPV vaccination reduces cervical cancer deaths. With vaccinated generations now reaching adulthood, this study provides the strongest national evidence to date that the vaccine is saving lives.

The study estimated that those vaccinated at age 12–13 have close to zero risk of dying from cervical cancer before the age of 30, reflecting the huge success of the school-based HPV vaccination programme.

Professor Peter Sasieni, the study’s lead author from , says, “It’s amazing news that no women aged between 20–24 died from cervical cancer in the whole of England between 2020 and 2024. That remarkable fact is thanks to nearly 90% of Gen Z women having received the HPV vaccine through the school vaccination and catch-up programmes.”
