Islington u3a are seeing an increase in the rate of new members joining and the number of ‘New Members Teas’ has had to grow too. The most recent tea held in Archway, for eight new members, was held at Mosaic. At this friendly and successful gathering. new members had a chance to meet Committee members and enquire about groups, outings and other activities offered at Islington u3a. It was also a great chance to chat and make new friends.

Have you seen the survey from Islington council? It’s about living a happy later life in Islington. Thirty Islington u3a walkers have just returned from a fabulous long weekend in the Yorkshire Dales. Enjoyable days were spent completing walks of various lengths, with a great group of people. The scenery was spectacular, with perfect walking weather, in an area of immense, stark beauty and dramatic landscapes.

It’s a wonderful collaboration that Islington_u3a now have with .Instagram. Many of our monthly meeting speakers have written books and on those occasions the local Waterstones set up a desk, creating a catalyst for much discussion as members pursue books relevant to the day’s talk.

The Islington u3a “Art in London” is a friendly group, they start all their outings with a rendezvous and chat in a cafe. They recently visited the Courtauld Institute of Art for the “Hepworth in Colour” exhibition. Barbara Hepworth is one of the most celebrated artists of the 20th century and her exhibition did not disappoint. It explored her fascination with colour, displaying early sculptures alongside important drawings from the 1940s.

Islington u3a members recently attended the u3a York Festival. This popular biennial event, for all u3a UK members, was thoroughly enjoyed by those who attended. It was an opportunity to make social connections, the key to a happy later life, and good for brain health too.

Congratulations to the Islington uЗa "Cryptic Crossword" group 1 for their crossword being featured in the magazine “u3a matters”.
If you would like to learn how to solve cryptic crossword puzzles or improve your crossword skills, Islington u3a have two crossword groups, both meeting monthly; group one on a Monday and group two on a Thursday. These groups cater for puzzle solvers of all levels.

The next Islington u3a monthly meeting will be held on Thursday 24th September at St Mary’s in Upper Street, N1 2TX.

u3a has been featured on ITV's “This Morning” and national newspapers recently about a member from Sudbury u3a, Melanie, who lifts for Team GB and took home gold in the over-70s category at the British Powerlifting Championships. She can deadlift 135kg — the weight of an upright piano — bench press 45kg, and teaches others weightlifting in her u3a. Impressive! The Islington u3a monthly outing opportunity, in October, open to all members, will be to Kew Gardens, on Tuesday morning 6th October, with an optional lunch. The visit will include the largest presentation ever of Henry Moore statues, where this outdoor exhibition “brings art and nature together in an extraordinary scale”.
