MAUK MAUK, the first and leading Malayalee community organisation in the UK. Its history can be traced back to V K Krishna Menon’s Kerala Samajam of the 1930s.

The Malayalee Association of the United Kingdom (MAUK) is the first and leading Malayalee community organisation in the UK. In 1974, a handful of members of Kerala Samajam, who settled in the UK along with the newly migrated Malayalees from India and Singapore, registered ‘Malayalee Association of the UK’ as a friendly society. In 1987, MAUK Trust was formed and was registered under the charities commissions act as a charitable society. The same year MAUK also bought its own freehold property: 671 Romford Road, Manor Park, London E12 5AD, which is now known as ‘Kerala House, London’ ...the home of British Malayalees. In 2004, both MAUK and MAUK Trust were merged and re-registered as a charitable company for better administration.

Meet Shimmy — where a lifelong love of Bharatanatyam meets a passion for inspiring others.

Her journey with Bharatanatyam began at a young age, and over the years, dance has taken her from learning the foundations of this beautiful classical art form to performing, choreographing and creating memorable experiences on stages across the UK and beyond.

For Shimmy, dance is more than steps, rhythm and expression. It is a space to discover confidence, creativity and connection. She believes Bharatanatyam should be accessible, joyful and welcoming — a place where children and adults can learn at their own pace, express themselves freely and find their own connection with the art.

Alongside her life as a dancer and teacher, Shimmy is a full-time Assistant Headteacher, bringing her deep understanding of teaching and learning into every class.

This Vidyarambham, come and experience the grace, rhythm and storytelling of Bharatanatyam and take the first step towards beginning your own dance journey with us.

MAUK Community Champion Named Asian Media Awards Finalist

MAUK V.K. Krishna Menon Community Champion Awards 2025 winner Balakrishnan Balagopal has been shortlisted as a finalist in the Asian Media Awards 2026 for his investigative reporting for The Times.

Alongside journalist Shanti Das, Balagopal was recognised in the Best Investigation category for “Undercover in Britain’s Immigration Black Market,” an undercover exposé that uncovered a network of fake visa sellers and companies exploiting vulnerable migrant workers.

The investigation revealed how some workers were charged thousands of pounds for job sponsorships, often with little or no genuine work attached. Many were forced to continue making payments simply to maintain their immigration status and keep alive their pathway to Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) and, ultimately, citizenship.

The story serves as an important warning for migrants seeking opportunities abroad. With immigration policies frequently changing, applicants should always check official government rules, understand the immigration strategy of the country concerned and verify that any job offer or sponsorship arrangement is legitimate before making financial commitments.
Balagopal’s recognition as an Asian Media Awards finalist highlights the impact of investigative journalism in exposing exploitation, protecting vulnerable communities and promoting greater transparency within immigration systems.
