Care4Calais is a volunteer-run charity delivering essential aid and support to refugees living in the UK and Northern France. We believe in a fair and tolerant British society and advocate for a welcoming and inclusive attitude towards refugees. Operating year round, we provide warm clothing, bedding, food and medical assistance to people in desperate need. We also provide social support and inter

action, including language lessons and sports and music workshops. We are not politicians; we are ordinary people like you who believe that everyone deserves to be treated with dignity. We are on the ground with the refugees every single day, and are respectful of their common humanity and responsive to their needs. We use our on-the-ground presence and relationship with the refugee community to provide the much-needed help that other organisations are not able to. We also work with research and media organisations to advocate for a welcoming and inclusive attitude towards refugees and asylum seekers. We have hosted thousands of volunteers, politicians, journalists and campaigners at our centre in Calais and are involved in a number of campaigns aimed at influencing the public’s perception of refugees.

The power of putting on a jersey and being welcomed as part of the team. Meet C4C FC's latest recruits!

When everything else has been lost, a football pitch can offer a place to belong. A kick about with friends, an organised match, or a tournament can provide people seeking sanctuary a release from the daily stress, isolation and mental toll of the UK’s broken asylum system.

As the World Cup starts tomorrow, we want to give more refugees the chance to lace up their boots.

Whether you are sitting down to watch the World Cup or not, your donation could help hire a football pitch, buy a football, provide training gear or help fund a tournament.

As Volunteers' Week comes to an end, we want to say thank you to every Care4Calais volunteer. You are the difference makers, the ones who support people seeking safety across the UK and northern France.

Since Care4Calais started in 2015, thousands of people have volunteered with us. You've supported people living in the Calais jungle, in squalid hotels and former military camps, and defeated the UK Government on Rwanda, Channel pushbacks and much more.

It's people like you that will help us restore kindness, compassion and humanity into the UK system, starting with the introduction of Safe Routes.

Want to join them? Comment VOLUNTEER below.

Many hands make light work - and that’s why we were delighted to welcome the most recent delegation from Stand up to Racism to our warehouse in Calais.

With the constant wave of site evictions by the French authorities, and the heatwave that hit northern France, we’ve never been more grateful for their support.

Delivering second hand donations they’d collected ✅

Distributing 427 pairs of shoes ✅

Checking tents to respond to the next eviction ✅

Distributing water bottles and sunhats in the heat ✅

This was a group that did so much over their weekend.

Alan, who was part of the delegation, reported back on his experience of volunteering at the site;

“The camp was a large area of flat dense scrub. People set up their tents in the shade of small trees and bushes largely sealed from view. We brought three fully laden vans with kit. First out was the phone charging station made up of 3 generators and 4 scaffold planks mounted with electrical adaptors. On top of this were 4 USB hubs with numerous cables.

“The main activity of the day was the distribution of 427 pairs of trainers and boots. The refugees had travelled many hundreds of miles, sometimes on foot. A scant glance at their footwear revealed well worn trainers or "sliders" , a sort of flipflop. Allocated volunteers took shoe size requests. There was a changing area. Each person was allowed one change if their first shoe didn't fit.

It was startling how young they all seemed to be. I would guess 90% were under 20 years old. Considering the journey they have completed to get here that is remarkable.”

Alan’s report captures the reality of the situation in Calais. Brutal living conditions, with a great need for aid that we deliver. Without people like Alan, the situation would be a whole lot worse.

It’s Volunteers’ Week and whether you want to come alone and meet like-minded people here, or you want to organise to come as a part of a group like Stand up to Racism do, you too can make a difference by signing up.

“Simon, what you have helped build within the Care4Calais Liverpool group is truly outstanding, you have helped create a welcoming, supportive community that has made a real difference to so many lives. The impact of your leadership continues to inspire us all.”

After five years, our lead in Liverpool, Simon, is stepping back - and as our Field Operations Manager for the Region, Bex, outlines we are going to miss him!

As he steps back, we couldn’t not have a conversation with Simon about the last five years, both the highs and lows.

And there is no better time to have that conversation than during Volunteers’ Week, when we are celebrating all that our volunteers like Simon do for people seeking safety.

Going back to when it all started, Simon reflected on a period of personal change.

“My wife got ill and I had been working in a litigation role for years and I had a moment where I thought; “What the f**k am I doing?”. I quit that job that I had come to hate, moved into an education role and committed to volunteering.”

Having spent a few years collecting donations from various collection points for Care4Calais, we were the obvious choice.

“I officially joined in summer 2021, and by early 2022, Kelly, the Head of Field Operations, had me signing up as Liverpool area lead!

“Everyone who has met Kelly will know she has that power of persuasion. But she really was a mentor to me, and I am forever grateful to her.”

As Liverpool lead, Simon says he built the group's work around four key cornerstones - 1) distributing material aid like clothing; 2) Befriending; 3) Wellbeing support; 4) Organised drop-ins and activities.

“When I signed up, I knew I would be busy with handing out aid, organising drop-ins, doing befriending and wellbeing work. What I didn’t expect was to be jumping out a plane to raise funds for the legal challenge against Rwanda. As someone with a fear of heights, that was a challenge.”

Simon raised well over £1,000 towards the fight against the Tories’ Rwanda plan.

Whilst we spent time reminiscing about all the highs, there was no avoiding the biggest of lows - the riot in Knowsley.

Simon told us he had headed to a counter protest against a demonstration that had been organised with support from well-known far-right groups. He didn’t expect the evening to turn out as it did.

“We turned up to counter the far-right, and ended up kettled in a carpark, with fireworks fired towards us, and burning police vans as people rioted.

“It really shook us. I recognise it wasn’t the first time there’s been far-right violence, but it was new for Liverpool.

“It was a scary experience, and one I have spoken about at many events since, organised by trade unions and groups like Stand up to Racism.

“But whilst that was my experience of the riots in Knowsley, what was more important was the experience of those living in that hotel.

“The next day, we returned. To show solidarity, to create connections and just remind them that people do care about them. The juice and sweet treats helped with that.”

“You can imagine the atmosphere inside the hotel was one of real fear.

“Many of the residents had risked their lives to reach safety in the UK, but here they were, in Liverpool, with a riot on their door. It was shocking.”

Knowsley was hard. But Simon wanted to emphasise how positive his experience with Care4Calais has been.

“Over the years I have received so many messages from people who I might never meet again, people thanking us for the support we’ve given them as they set out on the next stages of their lives. My wife and I have shared so many tearful moments reading kind messages from the people we’ve met - it’s incredibly touching.

“But as I take a step back, for now, I have every confidence in the Care4Calais Liverpool team. The best part of being involved with Care4Calais is absolutely the extraordinary people I’ve met. They give you a lift, even in the hardest of moments.

“We’re a team that has built a capacity to say yes, even when it would be easier to say no. And by saying yes, we are giving the community we support the confidence to be themselves, to leave their accommodation and be part of the community.

“Being part of Care4Calais changed me.

“It’s the happiest I’ve ever been.

“As I step back, I do so knowing that Care4Calais is still there to support the community - I hope people like you join them.”

From all at Care4Calais - thank you Simon!

And thanks to all our wonderful volunteers this Volunteers’ Week, who like Simon, make a world of difference to people seeking sanctuary.

Politicians and the media want you to believe refugees risk their lives crossing the Channel because we give them benefits - really?

30/05/2026

A 40% reduction in the last year. Just 485 refugees able to access it.

The fact is for refugees, there are no Safe Routes to seek safety in the UK. But you can join our movement calling for them. Comment SAFE ROUTES below to support the campaign.

“As temperatures soared across northern France this week, people were advised not to be outside during peak hours of sun exposure - but for most people accessing our services this is not possible.

“As the temperatures rose, we organised a distribution offering a choice between a reusable water bottle or a sun hat, items that can be really important in protecting from the heat and preventing dehydration.

“As a team, we also learned all the different ways a bucket hat can be styled!”

Care4Calais are on the ground in northern France 12 months of the year, and the team operates with incredible flexibility in order to meet the changing needs of the refugee community living in the harshest of conditions here.

This week’s distribution of water bottles and sun hats is just the latest example. But whilst it was water bottles and sun hats this week, next week it could be shoes or tents to respond to the latest site eviction. We need to be prepared for every eventuality on the ground.

It’s only through the solidarity of our supporters that we are able to deliver our humanatrian aid work. You can help power the next distribution by donating to support work - https://help.care4calais.org/page/148309/donate/1?locale=en-GB
