| A plume detected over the Moatize coal mine in on 25 October 2025 emitted around 2,300 kilograms of methane per hour 🇲🇿 🛰️

That is the climate equivalent of roughly 18,000 cars driving on the road simultaneously for one straight hour 🚙💨

The plume was identified in the same mining area examined by a recent Disclose and Socialter investigation into coal shipments supplying ArcelorMittal’s Dunkirk steel plant in France.

As steelmakers explore lower-emission production pathways, addressing methane emissions linked to coal supply chains could represent an important opportunity to reduce the sector’s overall climate footprint.

🚨 NEW | A typical household in the Philippines can now recoup the full cost of rooftop solar in just 3.1 years through savings on its electricity bill. That's down from 4 years in May 2025 ⚡☀️

This is thanks to a decline in solar installation costs, which fell 10% in the 12 months to May 2026. At the same time, household power prices surged 17% in the Philippines 🇵🇭

These two factors compressed payback timelines across all sectors:

Residential: 4.0 years ➡️ 3.1 years
Commercial: 3.0 years ➡️ 2.3 years
Industrial: 3.9 years ➡️ 3.1 years

In the same period, Ember estimates that rooftop solar capacity in the Philippines has likely nearly DOUBLED to ~1,300 MW.

🗣 "The economics of rooftop solar are more attractive than ever, and its rapid rise is inevitable," says Ember's Dave Jones . "The government has an opportunity to carve its own path on rooftop solar, to pull the Philippines out of fossil dependency and onto a path of cheap, abundant electricity."

The centre of gravity for renewable energy is shifting from China to the Asia-Pacific, led by India and major Southeast Asian economies.

This region is on track to generate about 6,100 TWh of renewable electricity per year by 2050 – exceeding Europe’s entire electricity generation of 5,000 TWh in 2025.

Grids in the region will need to adapt to the growing pe*******on of variable renewable energy while facing increasing risks of disruptions from extreme weather events.

AI-enabled adaptation could help maintain reliability of Asia-Pacific’s power grids in an increasingly volatile environment.
