Today and tomorrow, 28 and 29 April, 57 countries are gathering in Santa Marta, Colombia, for the first international conference dedicated to a just transition away from fossil fuels, co-hosted by the governments of Colombia and Netherlands.
Here ABColombia engaged in the academic forum and the People’s Assembly discussing the barriers posed by ISDS to climate action.

On 24-29 April the world will convene in Santa Marta, Colombia, to work towards a plan to phase-out fossil fuels.

As Santa Marta gets under way, a growing number of international voices are calling for countries around the globe to address systemic barriers to phasing out fossil fuels, including legal investment treaties that penalise climate action.

ISDS prevents countries from passing policies to address climate change and phase out fossil fuels, for fear of being sued by multinationals, including UK multinationals, in international investment tribunals for billions of dollars.

220 global experts urge President Petro to launch an Alliance of Countries to take action to end investor-state dispute settlement (ISDS) during the International Conference on Just Transition Away From Fossil Fuels at the End of April 2026. They are deeply concerned that ISDS poses a serious obstacle to building prosperous, equitable, and sustainable societies.

ABColombia expresses its profound concern regarding the threats and statements posted on social media stigmatizing the work of CINEP on 4 March 2026, putting them and the communities they accompany at risk.

Of grave concern is the context in which these statements were issued, as Chocó sees a resurgence of armed violence against the civilian population. This has increased fear and concern for those who are defending peace and social justice in the territories and poses a direct threat to the legitimate work in defence of human and environmental rights in one of the most ethnic and biodiverse regions of Colombia.
