Orchid Project

Orchid Project Working together to end female ge***al mutilation/cutting, Orchid Project ( now incorporating 28 Too Many). This is possible within the next generation.

The Orchid Project (joined by 28 Too Many on the 1st April 2022) has a simple vision: a world free from female ge***al cutting. We want to work with local, national and international organisations, who together can end FGM/C. We want to raise awareness, gain support and ensure there are more resources to allow us to end FGM/C by 2025. FGM/ C is a recognised abuse of human rights, child rights and

women’s rights. It is recognised globally as such, yet still, 3 million girls a year are cut in Africa alone. 140 million women around the world are living with the effects of FGM/C. Orchid Project will:
- Work with strategic delivery partners who deliver an end to FGM/C at the grassroots level
- Communicate to the world and the general public the successes of our partners and others, showing the message of hope
- With the incorporation of 28 Too Many research function we will collate and interpret data through Country Profile Reports and Thematic Papers.
- Advocate at a high level for increased global resources to end FGM/ C

Has there been progress in ending female ge***al mutilation/cutting (FGM/C)? Fiona explains that whilst prevalence rates in some countries have decreased, population growth in practising countries means that the number of girls at risk of being cut each year has increased to 4.3 million.
But there is hope, narratives are changing due to the hard won efforts of activists and organisations. FGM/C is not a cultural practice, it’s not a religious requirement, it’s a form of gender based violence, a public health emergency and violence against children. Orchid Project will continue to work to end FGM/C and call it for what it is! Thank you to and and the Home Office for making this Summit happen.

“Too many times they make decisions when survivors are not in the room. So for me, that is my takeaway, that we had a platform to express ourselves today.” Meet Valerie, she’s the founder of and activist working to end female ge***al mutilation/cutting. She spoke on the panel at the pre conference at Women Deliver on Sunday. We’re grateful to Valerie for joining this space and for highlighting why it is so important to make sure that we continue to show up to spaces like and to foster spaces where survivors are at the forefront of conversations and decisions made around ending FGM/C. We co-hosted this impactful event alongside all of our amazing partners at . Stay tuned for more updates from Women Deliver.

“It is particularly important to be here today as we see increasing pushback on women’s rights and decreased funding.”
Meet . She’s part of the team holding the line for FGM/C at CSW. There has undoubtably been a global backlash against women’s rights which is only intensifying. UN Women has stated that 1 in 4 governments have reported reversals in gender equality as of 2024. That’s why Orchid Project are working as hard as ever to hold the line. We stand in solidarity with all organisations, advocates and those working to protect the hard won gains for women’s rights and sexual health and reproductive rights.

On Tuesday we attended a screening of 10 short films created through in partnership with , all focusing on violence against women. This included Orchid Project’s latest film, Hidden Voices, written and directed by and produced by through

FGM/C is often siloed as an issue, leaving it out of conversations and funding. But it is a form of violence against women. Being part of this project has both helped further the conversations around recognising FGM/C as violence against women, and has helped gain awareness with many people previously unfamiliar with FGM/C.

We cannot thank Media Trust enough for this incredible opportunity, particularly Evie Wright our Executive Producer and to everyone who made this film possible.
Thank you to for the photos.
