Summer often brings two very different conversations.

For some families, it’s about planning days out, keeping children entertained, and making the most of the school holidays.

But for others, it’s about something far more immediate, how to keep cupboards filled when the usual support of school meals is paused.

Across the UK, school holidays can place extra pressure on families already facing food insecurity, as the cost of feeding children at home increases and routines shift.

Volunteers Week... we can't believe it's nearly over! 💚✨

What a wonderful week it's been celebrating the amazing people who make Food Bank Aid what it is. Our volunteers are the heart and soul of everything we do, and we simply couldn't do it without you.

From bingo and birthday celebrations to quizzes, delicious treats generously provided by local restaurants, our spectacular Wall of Volunteers, and even two fantastic corporate volunteering sessions, it's been a joy to celebrate the people behind the mission.

Thank you for your time, your energy, your compassion, and your endless support. You make a difference every single day, and we're so grateful to have you as part of the Food Bank Aid family.

World Hunger Day may be over, but hunger is still affecting communities every single day 💚

Across the UK, millions of people continue to experience food insecurity, including working households, families and individuals facing rising living costs and unexpected hardship.

At Food Bank Aid, our work does not stop after one awareness day. Every week, we continue coordinating shopping lists, sorting donations and supporting food banks around North London to help ensure essential items reach the people who need them most.

Today is World Hunger Day, but for the families we support, hunger doesn't take a day off.

Right now, parents across London are skipping meals to make sure their children eat. People are facing crisis, isolation, and impossible choices about the basics the rest of us take for granted.

It's your support that means places like that exist, 33 food projects across London that Food Bank Aid supplies with food and essentials every week.

Did you know the UK’s first modern food bank opened just 26 years ago?

The first food bank was established in Salisbury in 2000 as a local response to families struggling to afford food and other essentials. At the time, food banks were not a common part of life in the UK, with most emergency food support provided informally through churches and community organisations.

Over the following years, and particularly after the 2008 financial crisis, food banks began to grow rapidly across the country as more people faced financial hardship and rising living costs.

What began as a small community initiative has since developed into a nationwide network of support, helping millions of people each year.

Today, food banks are a vital source of immediate support for communities across the UK, with an estimated 2,800 of them. Behind every food parcel is a network of volunteers, donors and charities working together to ensure people can access the essentials they need.

At Food Bank Aid, we are committed to making every donation go as far as possible 💚

We work closely with 33 food banks and charities across North London to understand exactly what support is needed through regular shopping lists and direct communication with the organisations we serve.

By identifying priority items through our shopping lists and buying in bulk, we are able to maximise donations, stretch resources further and ensure food banks receive the products they need most, rather than items that may go unused.

Our work is made possible by a dedicated team of volunteers who help collect, sort and distribute donations across London every week. Their support allows us to respond quickly and efficiently to changing demand across the city.
