Engineering Council

Engineering Council The Engineering Council is the UK regulatory body for the engineering profession.

We hold the national registers of professionally registered engineers and technicians (EngTech, IEng, CEng and ICTTech). As the regulatory body for the UK engineering profession, the Engineering Council sets and maintains internationally recognised standards of professional competence and commitment. These are detailed in the UK Standard for Professional Engineering Competence (UK-SPEC) and the In

formation and Communications Technology Technician (ICTTech) Standard. We also hold the national register of over 230,000 engineers and technicians who have been assessed against these standards and awarded one of our professional titles:

Engineering Technician (EngTech)
Incorporated Engineer (IEng)
Chartered Engineer (CEng)
Information and Communications Technology Technician (ICTTech)

The award and retention of these titles ensures that employers, government and wider society – both in the UK and overseas – can have confidence in the knowledge, experience and commitment of engineers and technicians on the register.

This Pride Month, we're celebrating the members of the profession who bring their whole selves to their work, and the employers, professional engineering institutions, and individuals committed to making engineering a more inclusive and welcoming profession for everyone.

Did you know that professional engineering requires recognising the value of diversity and inclusion? That’s why our Standards for professional registration (UK-SPEC, the ICTTech Standard and UK-SPEC HRB) embed awareness directly into the competence requirements.

To every LGBTQ+ engineering professional on the Register and beyond: we see you and we value your contribution. πŸ³οΈβ€πŸŒˆ

2025 was a year of significant delivery for the Engineering Council, and our Annual Review reflects just how much ground we covered.

From the launch of UK-SPEC HRB at the House of Lords, to extending our Washington Accord signatory status for a further six years, to the inclusion of our US Mutual Recognition Agreement in the UK Trade Strategy - this was a year defined by milestones that matter for the engineering profession.

And through it all, we've been laying the groundwork for what comes next - our 2030 Strategy and refreshed brand, both launched in the New Year.

This week is Volunteers' Week - and we want to take a moment to recognise the people who make so much of what we do possible.

Our volunteers help develop and maintain the Standards and Guidance that underpin professional registration, support the quality assurance of our licensed professional institutions, and bring vital insight from across industry, academia, and beyond. To every volunteer, past and present: thank you.

Professionally registered individuals are trusted in their fields.

Being on a register like Chartered Scientist, Chartered Engineer or Chartered Environmentalist is an acknowledgement of the experience and responsibility held by every registrant.

It’s also a voluntary means by which professionals demonstrate their commitment to accountability, competence, integrity, and ethical standards.

When it comes to higher-risk buildings, how do you know the engineering professionals on your project are truly up to the standard?
HRB registration gives you that assurance.

Engineers and technicians on our Higher-Risk Buildings Register are peer-reviewed and assessed against rigorous criteria - so you can have confidence in who's delivering the work, and demonstrate that confidence to your clients.

What HRB registration means for your organisation:
βœ… Verified competence - Registered professionals have been independently assessed, giving you and your clients a clear benchmark of capability.
🀝 Direct route to credential checks - Our Register gives you a direct route to verify credentials, supporting your due diligence and reducing risk.
πŸ“ˆ Continuous development - Registrants commit to ongoing CPD, so your team stays current with the latest building safety regulations and best practice.

Higher-risk buildings demand high standards. HRB registration helps ensure your projects - and your organisation - are built on them.

Meet Pang Yiu Kei Kenji, who works in critical facilities and engineering management. On the benefits of professional registration:

"Registration has strengthened my credibility with clients and stakeholders, especially in regulated or high-risk environments. It supports my employer by demonstrating that our engineering leadership meets recognised global standards. It has also opened doors to new responsibilities, regional roles, and opportunities to mentor others on their own professional journeys."

What a wonderful afternoon! 🌟

We held our second Summer Networking Reception yesterday at the stunning No.4 Hamilton Place, home to the Royal Aeronautical Society, bringing together operational staff from professional engineering institutions and Engineering Council staff.

After a successful first event last year, it was brilliant to see so many familiar and new faces come together again.

A huge thank you to everyone who attended and helped make it such a special occasion. We can't wait to do it all again next year!

Engineering shapes the world around us βˆ’ from clean energy and resilient infrastructure to the digital systems connecting our lives.

Across a complex and evolving profession, clear, consistent standards matter βˆ’ in every role, every sector, and at every stage of a career. The Engineering Council's role is to bring clarity and confidence to that system.

We've put together a short video introducing who we are and why it matters.
