Engineering Council

The Engineering Council is the UK regulatory body for the engineering profession.

We hold the national registers of professionally registered engineers and technicians (EngTech, IEng, CEng and ICTTech). As the regulatory body for the UK engineering profession, the Engineering Council sets and maintains internationally recognised standards of professional competence and commitment. These are detailed in the UK Standard for Professional Engineering Competence (UK-SPEC) and the In

formation and Communications Technology Technician (ICTTech) Standard. We also hold the national register of over 230,000 engineers and technicians who have been assessed against these standards and awarded one of our professional titles:

Incorporated Engineer (IEng)
Chartered Engineer (CEng)
Information and Communications Technology Technician (ICTTech)

The award and retention of these titles ensures that employers, government and wider society – both in the UK and overseas – can have confidence in the knowledge, experience and commitment of engineers and technicians on the register.

Engineering professionals play a vital role in the design, construction and maintenance of Higher-Risk Buildings (HRBs).

HRB registration provides independent recognition that an engineer or technician has demonstrated the competence required by the UK-SPEC HRB Standard in their discipline.

For employers, clients, building owners and occupiers, it offers assurance that individuals have been independently assessed against recognised standards.

Today is International Women in Engineering Day!

It's a chance to shine a light on women engineers and their achievements - and this year's theme, Engineering Intelligence, gives us a good lens for it.

Engineering Intelligence speaks to the expertise, creativity and judgement behind the systems, structures and solutions we rely on every day.
Women play an important role in contributing to that intelligence, yet their contributions are not always as visible as they should be.

Recognising those contributions matters. It helps ensure that the stories we tell about engineering better reflect the people behind it, while inspiring future generations to see a place for themselves in the profession.

Maintaining public trust in engineering depends not only on technical competence, but also on ethical practice.

The Statement of Ethical Principles, developed jointly by the Engineering Council and the Royal Academy of Engineering, sets out five fundamental principles that support ethical behaviour and decision-making across the profession.

By providing a shared foundation for the codes of conduct set out by individual professional engineering institutions, it helps promote consistent ethical standards and supports confidence in engineering professionals and the important role they play in society.

James Byass CEng MCIBSE is a Mechanical, Electrical and Plumbing Engineering Director at Max Fordham LLP, where he leads a group specialising in residential projects.

"I am passionate about problem-solving and finding solutions that enrich the lives of ordinary people ... [T]he reward is clear when residents start moving into projects I have been involved with."

James recently became registered as a Chartered Engineer for Higher-risk Buildings (HRB), drawing on more than 20 years of experience.

2025 was a year of significant delivery for the Engineering Council, and our Annual Review reflects just how much ground we covered.

From the launch of UK-SPEC HRB at the House of Lords, to extending our Washington Accord signatory status for a further six years, to the inclusion of our US Mutual Recognition Agreement in the UK Trade Strategy - this was a year defined by milestones that matter for the engineering profession.

And through it all, we've been laying the groundwork for what comes next - our 2030 Strategy and refreshed brand, both launched in the New Year.
