Pumpherston Heritage

Did you know…?

Long before North Sea oil made Aberdeen famous, Pumpherston was at the heart of a global oil industry.

The Pumpherston Oil Works opened in the 1880s and quickly became one of the most important shale oil operations in the world. In 1894, local engineers developed the revolutionary Pumpherston Retort – a new way of extracting oil from shale that became the industry standard and was exported around the globe.

At its peak, experts travelled from across the world to learn from the technology being developed right here in Pumpherston.

Perhaps even more remarkable is the story of the Fraser family. William Fraser helped establish the Pumpherston Oil Company, and his son, William Fraser Jr, went on to become the first Chairman of BP (British Petroleum). He was later made Baron Strathalmond of Pumpherston, taking the name of our village all the way to the House of Lords.

Think about that for a moment…

A village built around shale mining and oil production helped shape one of the world’s largest energy companies.

Next time you pass the golf course (the site of the Oil Works, remember that Pumpherston wasn’t just part of industrial history — for a time, it was helping to make world history 🖤💛

🌟 International Volunteer Week 🌟

This week, we want to say a heartfelt thank you to every single volunteer who helps make Pumpherston the wonderful community it is.

Some of you plant flowers and tend our planters. One of you weeds and keeps our Main Street looking its best. One of you cares for our War Memorial with pride and respect. Others grow fruit and vegetables that are shared throughout the community.

Some of you litter pick. Some run workshops. Some provide support when people need it most. Some fundraise tirelessly behind the scenes. Some give your time to the football club, bowling club, golf club, community groups, and local events. Some support those who are underprivileged, vulnerable, isolated, or underrepresented. Some offer friendship, guidance, and mental health support when it’s needed most.

Many of these acts happen quietly. Without recognition. Without reward. Often at the expense of your own time, energy, and sometimes even your own pocket.

We could name many of you, but we know we’d never manage to name everyone, and the last thing we’d want is for anyone’s contribution to be overlooked. So this post is for all of you - Thank you so much 👏🏼👏🏼

Please know that your efforts are seen. They are appreciated. They make a difference.

Communities don’t thrive because of buildings, facilities, or funding alone. They thrive because ordinary people choose to care enough to get involved.

Pumpherston is a better place because of you.

Thank you for every hour you’ve given, every task you’ve taken on, every person you’ve helped, and every positive change you’ve made.

🖤We see you.
💛We appreciate you.

Happy International Volunteer Week to every volunteer helping make Pumpherston a community we’re proud to call home

Well done Colin and all the team Pumpherston Golf Club 🖤💛

Great to be supporting this event

With one day to go to the re-launch of the West Lothian High School Golf Championships at Pumpherston Golf Club on Thursday 4 June 2026, the organisers are thrilled to report that there are 46 confirmed entrants ready to tee off and chase the title.
With prizes for Gross, Nett and Stableford results. The event promises to deliver a day of fair play and positive engagement between players from ten of the thirteen secondary schools in West Lothian. There are also prizes for the longest drive and nearest the pin.
Parents and supporters are welcome to come along on the day and watch the action if they are able, as well as the teachers from each school who have committed to support their students.
Tournament organiser, Colin McLean, Junior Convenor at Pumpherston Golf Club said;
‘We are absolutely delighted with a field of 46 players as we re-launch this long absent schools competition. This puts us very much at an equal level of engagement with other regions that we are aware of and we would have had as many as 60 players but a few have been unable to obtain their official handicaps or the required information in time, and a couple have had to withdraw due to injury and other reasons. We hope we will see those players ready to go next year.
There are definitely procedural changes we’d like to make as we already start looking ahead to next year, and we will aim to fill the tee sheet with the full 72 players in 2027 with entrants from every secondary school in West Lothian. This year though, we are looking forward to seeing the players out on the course, getting to meet and interact with other golfers from across the county as well as spending a school day playing the sport we love. Special mention must be made of the teachers and Active WL co-ordinators in the schools who have helped us get information out to the entrants and feeding information back to us.’
- Entered players will check in at Pumpherston Golf Club between 0830 and 0900 on Thursday 4 June.
- Players and accompanying teachers will receive free breakfast rolls on arrival.
- Players will pre-order their lunch on arrival and will be informed of their tee time on check in.
- All player briefing at 0930 on the first tee.
- First group tee off at 0945
- Final group will tee off at approx. 1140
- Water and a soft drink will be provided between the 9th green and 10th tee.
- Lunch will be provided for all players and accompanying teachers on completion of the round
- Last group expected to finish the round at approx. 1537
- There will be no prize presentation on the day of the competition. We will arrange with schools to present trophies at a convenient time in School.
- With thanks again to the Stephen Gallacher Foundation and to Shot Scope for their sponsorship which has paid for the players entry fees, trophies, and food for the 2026 competition.
- Prizes: Individual Gross Score 1st, 2nd, 3rd : Individual Nett Score 1st, 2nd, 3rd : Team Stableford Score (Top two scores in any team of 2-4 Players), Longest Drive, Nearest the Pin.

What creative workshops would YOU like to see in the village?

One of the things we’ve discovered is that lots of people fancy trying something new, but don’t want to spend a fortune buying all the equipment only to discover it’s not for them!

So we’re exploring a range of affordable “have-a-go” workshops where everything is provided – you just turn up and give it a try.

We’ve already got things like:
🌸 Flower arranging
✂️ Collage
🎨 Pebble painting
💌 Card making
💍 Jewellery making

But we’re open to absolutely anything…

Could be artistic, crafty, practical, creative, traditional, modern, indoor or outdoor.

Maybe:
🔨 Woodworking
📷 Photography
🎣 Fly tying
🧵 Upholstery
🎨 Watercolour painting
📚 Creative writing
🪴 Gardening
🍄 Growing your own food
🖌️ Sign writing
📱 Phone photography
🎭 Model making
🔧 Basic DIY skills
🪚 Spoon carving
🕯️ Candle making
🍞 Bread making

What would tempt YOU to come along and give something a go?

Pop your ideas in the comments 👇

No experience needed, no pressure to be good at it, just a chance to learn something new, meet people and maybe discover a hobby!
