Learning from nature, in nature 🌿

We very much welcome the long-awaited proposal for a new GCSE in Natural History.

At Wilder Doddington, we see every day that nature is interconnected. Woodlands, hedgerows, grasslands, wetlands, rivers and farmland all form part of a much bigger living landscape. The GCSE should integrate well with Wilder Doddington’s learning offer, which ranges from primary school visits to undergraduate training.

With the consultation closing tomorrow, we’ve shared our hope that this interconnectedness comes through strongly, alongside the important message that people can be a positive force for nature recovery and that we all depend on healthy natural systems, not least for our food.

We also welcome the emphasis on outdoor learning and fieldwork, giving more young people different ways to learn, connect with nature and experience its benefits for wellbeing.

Today we’re celebrating Isobel, our ‘Wild Woman’, as she retires after more than six years at Doddington.

Isobel has been the driving force behind Wilder Doddington, bringing extraordinary energy, determination and heart to everything she has done. She has championed nature, challenged thinking, built relationships, opened doors and inspired so many people along the way.

Thankfully, this isn’t really goodbye. Isobel will continue to be part of the Wilder Doddington story, supporting the project in an advisory capacity and staying involved in the work she cares so deeply about.

She now hands over the reins to our new Wilder Director, Ian Froggatt, as we move into the next phase of our vision.

Thank you, Isobel, for the charisma, enthusiasm and dung diving. For taking us on a wonderfully wild ride and always, quite literally, getting stuck in. We’ll never look at a cow pat in quite the same way again.

Here’s to the next chapter 🌿

A mothy morning of swifts, rustics, thorns and more ✨

Over 170 moths in the trap this morning, with Orange Swift and Setaceous Hebrew Character topping the count, plus plenty of rustics and underwings.

Other highlights included Ruby Tiger, Canary-shouldered Thorn, Centre-barred Sallow, Silver Y, Chinese Character, Nutmeg, Oak Hook-tip and White-point.

Moth trapping helps us discover more about the incredible diversity of species living in and moving through Wilder Doddington as the landscape continues to change.

Join us at the new Wild House for ‘A Wilder Welcome’ and discover a landscape changing before our eyes. Hear about the wildlife returning, the natural processes shaping the land and the vision behind Wilder Doddington.

There’ll be time to chat with the Wilder team over hot drinks and biscuits, ask questions and find out more about how we are reconnecting the landscape, nature and people.

A little behind-the-scenes work that makes a big difference 🌿

This week, our learning team joined our Wilder Ranger and brilliant volunteers to clear the way and improve access to our outdoor learning spaces, including the outdoor classroom, ready for visiting school and alternative provision groups this autumn.

A reminder that the risk of wildfires is currently exceptionally high following the prolonged drought.

If you’re visiting the Doddington Estate, please take extra care:

🔥 No naked flames are allowed, including ci******es, barbecues and campfires
🚮 Take all litter home, particularly glass or reflective items that could concentrate sunlight and start a fire

Even a small spark can quickly develop into a serious wildfire, putting people, wildlife and the landscape at risk.

If you see a fire, move to a safe location and call 999 immediately.
