Batman & Robin 🦇🔦

It’s Bat Week, and our very own dynamic duo, ecologist Harry and Conservation Adviser Matthew, have been busy surveying bats across Wilder Doddington this summer.

Since we began rewilding, we’ve recorded eight bat species across the Doddington Estate, including the rare Barbastelle Bat. That’s almost half of all UK bat species!

As nature recovers, our woodlands, hedgerows and wetlands are providing valuable habitats for bats and the insects they feed on 🌿

This spider may look like it’s wearing a Halloween costume, but it really does resemble a wasp 🕷️🐝

With striking yellow, black and white markings, the female Wasp Spider is more fascinating than frightening!

It’s harmless to people, and its wasp-like appearance is thought to help deter predators. Look closely and you’ll see the distinctive zigzag of silk in its web 🕸️

First recorded at Wilder Doddington in 2024, Wasp Spiders are relatively new to Lincolnshire. They favour rough grassland, one of the habitats returning as nature recovers across the Doddington Estate.

Not all ecosystem engineers have hooves! 🪱

This World Earthworm Day, we’re celebrating some of nature’s unsung heroes.

Working away beneath our feet, earthworms play a vital role in healthy soils, recycling nutrients, improving soil structure and helping water soak into the ground.

Nature recovery isn’t just about what we can see above ground. What happens below the surface helps shape the life above it.

Join us for a new series of morning yoga sessions at the Wild House, with beautiful views across the Wilder Doddington landscape.

Local instructor Yoga May will guide you through a gentle Vinyasa flow, helping you slow down, reconnect and start your day with a little time for yourself.

A small but special sighting! 🐦

This week, we were pleased to record our first Tree Sparrow at Wilder Doddington for several years.

The sighting comes as new Government figures reveal that the UK’s farmland bird populations have declined by 63% since 1970, with Turtle Dove and Tree Sparrow among the species to have experienced the steepest declines.

At Wilder Doddington, we’re working to restore a rich mosaic of habitats where wildlife can thrive. Farmland birds including Skylark, Grey Partridge and Yellowhammer continue to find a home here, and it’s especially encouraging to see a Tree Sparrow again.

There’s still much to do, but moments like this give us hope for a wilder future 💚

Learning in nature 🌿

It was great to welcome Year 13 Applied Science students from Walton Academy to Wilder Doddington.

Despite the unusually dry summer, students discovered a variety of species while carrying out woodland transect surveys in the morning, before releasing their inner child with some shelter building in the afternoon.
