A magical sight over Wilder Doddington🦉

We’ve loved watching this beautiful barn owl gliding and hovering as it hunts silently across the landscape.

Its heart-shaped facial disc acts like a natural satellite dish, funnelling faint sounds towards its ears and helping it pinpoint prey hidden below.

Perhaps there are some hungry mouths waiting to be fed nearby? 🤞🏼

Join us for Summer Tree ID at Wilder Doddington 🌳

Trees are some of the most powerful presences in the landscape, but how many can you confidently name?

In this practical workshop with Guy Petheram, you’ll learn how to recognise native trees by their leaves, bark, overall form and other signs. You’ll also discover some of the natural and cultural stories connected to different species.

The session combines time in the classroom with time outside in the parkland and woodland close to the Hall, taking a closer look at some of our wonderful trees.

Saturday 20 June, 10am–1.30pm
No prior knowledge needed
Limited tickets available, booking essential: www.doddingtonhall.com/event/summer-tree-id

Sunny spells one minute, stormy downpours the next… the Great British weather has certainly been unpredictable lately ☔️

As part of our Wetter Better project, we’ve been slowing the flow of water through Wilder Doddington, helping it spread out and stay in the landscape for longer.

Already, a new wetland is beginning to take shape, creating more space for wildlife and helping the land hold water for longer through both downpours and drier spells.

More from Wetter Better coming soon 💦

It’s Volunteers’ Week and, as Wilder Doddington turns five this week, we’re celebrating all the brilliant volunteers who have helped shape the journey so far 🌿

From hands-on habitat work and ecological surveys to supporting education, events and engagement, our volunteers are an important part of the Wilder Doddington ecosystem, helping nature recovery take root across the estate.

A huge thank you to everyone who so generously shares their time, energy, knowledge and enthusiasm. Wilder Doddington simply wouldn’t be the same without you 💚

Fancy joining our Wilder team? Keep an eye out for new volunteering opportunities coming soon.

There’s some very sweet news from the Fishpond at Wilder Doddington… 👀

Our Little Grebes have successfully raised four chicks, and these tiny humbugs are already making themselves at home on the water, swimming close by and regularly hitching rides on their parents’ backs.

It’s such a joy to see this little family doing well. If you spot them, please enjoy watching from a distance and keep dogs on leads so they can continue to thrive.

Welcome to Wetter Better 💧

Across the UK, many rivers have been straightened, wetlands drained and landscapes engineered to move water away as quickly as possible.

At Wilder Doddington, we’ve been working to reverse that story…

Over the last two years, we’ve been restoring freshwater habitats across the Doddington Hall Estate by creating new ponds, blocking historic land drains, reworking sections of the River Hobba and reconnecting it with its floodplain.

By holding water for longer, this work supports wildlife, improves water quality, builds resilience and helps reduce flood risk downstream.

Stay tuned as we share more from Wetter Better.

It’s and at Wilder Doddington, nature is the classroom 🌿

From our tipi, woodland classroom and new Wild House, young people are invited to step into the heart of the Wilder landscape, spark curiosity and connect with the natural world around them.

Our Wilder Learning offer includes primary and secondary school visits, alternative provision, further and higher education visits, and research opportunities.

Through hands-on outdoor learning, we hope to inspire care, confidence and wonder for nature ✨

We’re buzzing for 🐝

Wilder Doddington is alive with quiet, vital work as bees and other pollinators support the plants, wildlife and food systems we all depend on.

As more wildflowers, grassland, hedgerows and blossoming trees are given space to thrive, they have more places to feed, shelter and move through the estate.

Small but mighty, they help sustain people, nature and a landscape growing wilder, richer and more connected 🌿
