Whisby Nature Park

Whisby Nature Park Whisby Nature Park is a beautiful landscape near Lincoln, full of wildlife, walks and trails. Chiffchaffs, reed and sedge warblers can be heard.

Once barren and lifeless, this amazing place now abounds with wildlife. The park was created by quarrying for sand and gravel, but nature has reclaimed the pits and bare sand, creating habitats for many species. The lakes at Whisby Nature Park, near Lincoln, are surrounded by grassland, marsh, scrub and willow carr. Elements of the original landscape, from before quarrying also remain, with fragme

nts of heathland, old hedgerows and a small oak woodland. In spring and summer, flocks of t**s and finches are joined by warblers. The lakes attract feeding sand martins and swallows, and terns nest on the islands. Whisby Nature Park has also become famous for nightingales. Autumn brings the first sight of winter birds such as goldcrests, redpolls and grey wagtails. In winter, the water levels are at their highest and wildfowl are numerous. The Nature Park is open throughout the year, every day from Dawn to Dusk. Please note the North Kesteven District Council operate a pay and display car park at Whisby Nature Park

Well, probably not today, but in good weather our common lizards are popping up along the railway bridge fences again. With next week's hopeful good weather, there's a good chance of spotting them if you're quiet looking at the bottom railing of the fences around the railway bridge. Let us know if you find any!

It's not just human families that like a good wander around Whisby. Just look at these cuties, a family of mallard ducks waddling up the drain near Teal Lake. πŸ¦†

We were surprised to see that a dragonfly has chosen to emerge from its juvenile form into its adult form on our Education Centre wall. Usually they do this on water plants along the waters edge. Clearly it's been wet enough recently for them to roam further from the lake.

The RAF Waddington volunteers have been back and working hard today. They've laid the foundations for our new Bin Store and moved some of our banners to the front of the Education Centre entrance so people can see we are here. Thanks for the hard work. We're glad you managed to dodge the worst of the wet weather. πŸ‘πŸ‘

Just look at these cuties spotted by visitors Michala Parsonage and her daughter Lexie the other day. If you look carefully at the islands across our lakes you’ll notice a number of black-headed gull chicks are out and making noise for some food. And they are adorable! πŸ₯°

Just take a look at this orange swift moth, found in our wilder welcome barn by volunteer Hugh Jones. Fairly simple colours in a stunning design. If you take a moment to notice them, the little brown creatures can be just as beautiful as the brightly coloured ones.

So you may have questions about the fenced off bit of grassland at the reserve entrance. The reasons we blocked it off are starting to show. We currently have 17 beautiful bee orchids in that meadow stretch. These beautiful flowers may otherwise have been trampled underfoot or driven over by someone deciding to park on the grass and not in the car park. Now, anyone visiting the reserve can enjoy these lovely blooms if you walk on by that patch. Our fencing and signs will stay up a while longer to protect the orchids as they continue to bloom and ready seeds for the next generation of bee orchids. ☺️🐝

Anyone else seen or, more likely, heard the cuckoos around Whisby this year? This lovely example was spotted around Grebe lake by visitor Ros Atkinson and forwarded to us by Brian Watson. Thanks both! Keep your eyes and ears peeled for those cuckoos, folks.
