In the UK, cervical screening is offered to people aged 25–64 who have a cervix. You’ll be invited automatically, but it’s up to you to book and attend your appointment.
✨ Remember:
• Even if you’ve had the HPV vaccine, screening is still important
• Even if you’re not currently sexually active, screening still matters
• Even if you feel healthy, don’t skip your test
Your invitation is there to protect you—please don’t ignore it 💙
Encourage friends, family, and colleagues to check when they’re due and book their appointment today.

19 June is the International Day for the Elimination of Sexual Violence in Conflict
Lichfield & District Soroptimists stand in solidarity with survivors of sexual violence in conflict across the world.
Sexual violence is still used as a weapon of war—devastating lives, families, and communities. We reaffirm our commitment to raising awareness, supporting survivors, and advocating for justice, accountability, and lasting peace.
💜 We believe in a world where women and girls live free from violence.
💜 We support those whose voices must be heard.
💜 We call for global action to end sexual violence in conflict.
Together, we can make a difference.

It’s easy to think you only need to act if something feels wrong—but cervical screening is designed to catch changes before symptoms appear.
⚠️ Know the difference:
• Screening = routine prevention (even when you feel fine)
• Symptoms (like unusual bleeding, pain, or discharge) = contact your GP as soon as possible
Attending your screening when invited helps protect your future health 💙
Let’s keep spreading awareness and encouraging regular screening across our community.

Cervical screening isn’t a test for cancer – it’s a test to help prevent cancer. It checks for high-risk HPV (a very common virus) and early cell changes, so they can be treated before anything more serious develops.
✨ The key message:
Screening = prevention + peace of mind
Most people won’t have any problems, but attending your appointment ensures that if anything is found, it’s caught early when it’s easiest to treat 💙
Please share this message and encourage those around you to attend when invited – it could save a life.

We know that many people feel nervous, embarrassed, or unsure about attending their smear test – and that’s completely normal. But putting it off could mean missing early signs that can be easily treated.
✨ Did you know?
• You can ask for a female nurse or doctor
• You can bring a friend for support
• You’re in control – you can ask questions and stop at any time
Your comfort matters, and healthcare professionals are there to help you feel at ease
Let’s keep the conversation going and support each other to attend when invited 💙

Cervical screening (smear tests) saves lives – yet many people still delay or avoid their appointments. If you’ve been invited, please don’t put it off. It’s a quick check that could make all the difference.
• Cervical screening helps prevent cancer
• Even if you feel well, it’s important to attend
• If you're nervous, talk to your GP or nurse – they’re there to help
Let’s encourage each other to attend when invited and spread the word to friends, family, and our community 💬

💜 World Elder Abuse Awareness Day – 15 June 2026 💜
Over 1 million older people in the UK experience abuse each year — yet so much of it goes unseen and unspoken.
As Hourglass reminds us: 👉“Better understood. Still overlooked.”
This year’s United Nations theme —“Beyond Awareness: Making Elder Abuse Prevention Work” — challenges us to do more than notice… it calls us to act.
At Soroptimist International Lichfield & District, we believe every older person deserves dignity, respect, and safety.
💬 Check in on someone
👀 Be aware of the signs
🤝 Speak up if something doesn’t feel right
Because no one should feel invisible as they grow older.
💜 Wear purple. Start a conversation. Be the difference.

Do you ever worry that your children or grandchildren might be in an unhealthy relationship?

Every young person deserves a relationship built on respect, trust and safety — free from abuse. Talking openly about what’s healthy, reasonable and acceptable is one of the most effective ways to prevent harm before it starts.

Simple tools can help start those conversations. Resources like the Loves Me / Loves Me Not bookmarks, shared by many Soroptimist clubs in their communities, have become powerful conversation starters for young people and families alike.

Women’s Aid has also produced some excellent information on healthy relationships here.

Soroptimists continue to take action to improve women’s safety in our communities.

Despite a bumpy start, our June meeting turned into a fabulous evening of jazz, community, and connection! We officially welcomed new member Sam, returning visitor Denise, and first-timer Elaine. We were also joined by Yvonne James from Lichfield District Council, who shed light on local Community Safety Partnerships. We are excited to support their upcoming initiatives, including the Purple Flag campaign, Martyn’s Law, and Street Aid. Finally, we brainstormed ways to protect women and girls in our community by rolling out the Ask Angela campaign in local pubs.
We have a busy year ahead as we continue to stand up for women and girls 🫶
