This Week: The Harvest Is In!
This week at Wayfinders, we’re celebrating harvest time — exploring where our food comes from, what is being gathered from fields, gardens and hedgerows, and the journey food takes before it reaches our plates.
As always, children can explore the theme at their own level and in their own way, with lots of opportunities for talking, tasting, creating, investigating and playing.
🥕 Soup, Cut & Taste
We’ll be getting hands-on with seasonal vegetables!
Children can look, touch, smell, cut and taste a selection of vegetables before helping to make a simple warming soup.
Along the way we’ll explore colours, textures, shapes and smells, practise safe food preparation and talk about how vegetables change when they are chopped and cooked.

🍂 Explore the Harvest
Our harvest collection will bring a little bit of the outdoors inside.
Children can investigate foraged and natural harvest finds, looking closely at their shapes, colours, patterns and textures.
They might choose to recreate what they see using paint, make prints and marks inspired by natural objects, or combine different materials to create a harvest collage.
There is no expectation that everyone’s creation will look the same — observation, experimentation and children’s own ideas are all part of the learning.

🚜 From Farm to Our Plate
How did that carrot actually get onto our plate?
We’ll explore the journey of our food from seed → growing → harvesting → transporting → preparing → eating.
Activities will be available at different levels so younger children can explore simple sequencing and pictures, while older children can think more deeply about farming, food production and the journey our food makes.

🌻 Learning Through Play
Around the room there will also be plenty of opportunities to take the harvest theme in unexpected directions through small-world play, art, sensory exploration, construction, literacy, numeracy and imaginative play.
And, as always at Wayfinders, children don’t have to complete every activity.
They can linger over something that fascinates them, return to a favourite activity, work alongside a parent or another child, or take an idea in a completely different direction.
🌾 The Bigger Learning
Our Harvest Is In week brings together learning across the Curriculum for Excellence, including:
Sciences – plants, growing, seasonal change and food
Health & Wellbeing – preparing food, tasting and making choices
Social Studies – farming and where our food comes from
Literacy – new vocabulary, discussion, sequencing and comprehension
Numeracy – counting, measuring, sorting, comparing and ordering
Expressive Arts – painting, printing, collage and creative response
But perhaps most importantly, it’s an opportunity to slow down, notice the season, work together and enjoy learning through real experiences.
