A Spirited Evening with Leigh Spirit Co.
We had a fabulous evening at Legra Ladies this week when we welcomed Leigh Spirit Co. for a fascinating talk and tasting.
With Leigh-on-Sea’s colourful past, it seems rather fitting that a local spirits company should take inspiration from the town’s notorious history of smuggling. Years ago, Leigh and the surrounding Thames Estuary were well known for smuggling, with its creeks, coastline and busy shipping routes providing plenty of opportunities for contraband to be brought ashore.
Leigh Spirit Co. celebrates that local heritage throughout its range. The bottles feature local artwork and maps of Leigh, while the rums each carry an illustration of one of the sea creatures found in the estuary.
We learnt about their selection of rums, gins and vodkas. The rums originate from the Caribbean, while the gins take inspiration from the legend of the Sea Witch, Sarah Moore. Their vodka is made in the UK using British grain and is named after the Crow Stone, the historic marker in the estuary which marks the boundary of the City of London's jurisdiction.
Of course, it wasn't all history and learning – there was tasting too! Beth mixed us a delicious Crow Stone Mule, made with vodka, lime juice and ginger b**r, which went down extremely well.
A really enjoyable evening combining local history, local creativity and some very lovely spirits. Huge thanks to Leigh Spirit Co. for joining us and giving us such an interesting – and very tasty – evening! 🥂🍸
